Once you can end a round do it since the ai aims for a high score so it will always continue after the first time it can end the round.
It's better to win with 5 points than the ai getting 50+
Certain characters from Tales series will trigger bonuses. Since it is nearly impossible to get an full Tales set, you will have to settle with other cheap options such as
Crown princess - basically 3 characters are princesses in the game
Ninja - self explanatory like crown princess
Renegade - characters that are rebels
Heroic Scion - main hero set of at least 3 I think
Sworn ally - think this is a set of 5 or 6
When you play it enough, you'll understand the sets better. Take notes whenever a set is formed. But yea losing 160-0, you should try to take the game a lot slower and look at what makes a set
Ninja - 2 cards only, look for the shiruken icon
Renegade - 3 cards needed more are available. look for the purple lightning thingy.
Heroic Scion - 5 cards needed for this, more are available. Look for the star Icon
Sworn ally - Dual brown icon, 10 are needed for this set to complete, each one extra is worth 1 point.
Prodogy or something: it's the green staff's icon, need 4 to get the bonus.
I love playing the card mini game, losing hours in it really. and on intermediate even if you lose you get 200 coins, most coins I've won with it was 2500 from a 110 point win.
Basically if you want a cheap any easy win, aim for the ninja's or crown princess bundle, after that it's usually easier to get sworn ally then it is anything else. and like Jargous said, take what you can get, no use continueing the round if you don't see any new points coming within 1 round. And especially if both you and the AI only hold 2 cards.
Basicly i didnt look at the icon's just matching the cards lol.
For example, the "hero" set which requires at least 5 of the 9 possible hero cards. However, when I try to go for a set (using this hero set as a template) I'll check the possible cards that will come up by looking at the cards I have from that set, and the ones out on the field. At that point I will look and see if I have any duplicate cards from the same game, get rid of those first, and try to snatch the hero card with a pair.
The problem is the card I'm looking for never comes up, and if it does, its always drawn by my opponent during their draw-turn and snatches it in a pair out of sheer luck, making any attempts by me to farm it completely and utterly worthless.
Morever, this problem happens with every existing set that I go for, and I'm not sure how to alleviate this problem.
The problem with this game, is due to the sheer ridiculousness of the RNG against you, it makes strategizing almost entirely worthless. After a solid hour of learning all the sets and all the cards and coming up with strategies, I still haven't improved my win ratio (which is like a 1-10 loss because the AI gets all the valuable sets.)
The one time I got a valuable set was when I got Hero, and Singular Prodigy at the same turn and got 45 points. I wound up loosing because they got 65 points in the following turn by matching up like 2 sets in one turn, decided to continue, then I failed to get a set, and the following turn they got 2 more sets at the same time. It was completely ridiculous.

keep in mind...THIS WAS ALL ON NOVICE difficulty.
You can press select on the controller to check scoring card sets during the game (not sure what the button is for keyboard).
Sometimes the opponent makes a match, but the 2 cards end up going to my side. Why does that happen? o_O He's the one that made the set..
