The description says they're good for gald or money, I believe.
You can also open your item menu > "Materials" tab > "salvaged" section. Salvaged items are items that have no use, other than sell them for money. All salvaged item have the same symbol, so i think it is quite easy to recognise
It's actually nice, because the shop's level increases with the amount of money exchanged, be it buying, selling or upgrading, so selling all of that junk usually helps a fair bit, especially considering that it continues to accumulate in greater amount the farther you go into the story.
NOTE: do not sell all of the item in the same item category, just the ones with the same icon.
In that category, there are (top to bottom) equipment upgrade materials, food items and those junk at the bottom, the rest is actually useful and should only be sold if you have way too much of it (no point in staying at 90+ of equipment ones if you are making more constantly, I keep them at around 50 usually).
