Simply put, instead of your reasearch points going into new techs, they go into reforms which push you towards being a civ nation.

Yes but I'm confused about what determines what techs you get when you westernize (other than ones from reforms obviously) and how it affects diplomacy.

Sokoto is a real breeze, since you are isolated the europeans are a piece of cake to destroy. Definitely top country for beginners behind Russia and Papal States(Cause your pope so everyone surrenders to you)
