XML modding guide by Trapfly http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=401355156

Notes
- What should not be expected from modding Magicka?
We haven't figured out how to make custom weapons/staffs/monsters/etc. With good knowledge of C# you will be able to alter the game though. For example it's possible to change the element limit from 5 to, say, 7 elements.

What can be expected from modding Magicka?
Even though you can't create new animations, etc. (for now at least), this does NOT mean you can't make fun content. You can make sophisticated level events and create your own special challenges. You could even make your own campaign with custom dialogues.
- make existing challenges harder and/or easier
- create your own challenges based on existing maps with completely custom waves
- create custom adventures; you have to use existing environment, but can add dialogues, etc.
- create custom PvP levels (krietor's modpack for example)

Work in progress. New tools have recently been released that make creating new items, characters and even levels (to some extent) possible. Be excited because it's epic!

- How to play slightly modified game files online:
For multiplayer, Magicka only allows original game files. You can turn off the VAC "protection" to play custom levels with your friends, who have the exact same files (you gave them the files or they did give you the files).
This can be circumvented by modifying the original files AFTER you started Magicka.
When the modified files are in the game folder, start the server.
However, this only works with slightly modified levels, adding additional triggers (see XML modding docs) will make the others crash.
When you are finished, restore the original files (important)!
You may adapt my tool I linked above to automate this process with your own maps.

- How to play heavily modified game files and new content online:
You will need to distribute your files to other players if you want to play your custom content with others. This is best done by packing the files in an archive (such as .zip or .rar). Take a look at existing mods, if you need examples.

- Where to find help with modding?
Best post a comment in this thread. If I see you're serious about it, I'll send you a friend request.
If you have a problem with a piece of code, look in the original game files! Often there is similar code used that you can adapt.

- Share your knowledge!
That's right. Modding Magicka is supposed to raise the replay value of the game, it's not a competition about who can make the most impressive stuff.
So please, if you have anything worth sharing, post a comment here. After all, the easier modding is, the more people will do it and thus the more content we will have!

- Clarifications for cautious users
- This will not get you VAC banned
- Restoring original game files is easy; don't worry about making Magicka unplayable (click here)

If you have made a mod and want it to be listed in this thread, post a comment with all necessary informations about your work, which includes:
- does it replace files or not
- a detailed list of content it adds (or replaces)
- a list of people who worked on it; also give credit to people if you used their code
- an installation guide, if the installation differs from the usual installation procedure

Feel free to ask questions in the comments section.

Happy modding! :yellowwizard:

Didn't expected that someone made mods for Magicka. Thanks for writing!

Your list of usable xml codes is missing the amalgameddon magick, but regardless, this is a well made thread. I'll be sure to notify you when my map is finished so that you can list it here.

Well, it clearly says that it's incomplete.
Feel free to make an informative comment to complete the list though.

Yesterday someone in the Magicka chatroom had problems with the game files after doing some modding and thought he had to reinstall the game in order to have the original files again.

You do not have to reinstall the game!

Just follow these steps to restore the original game content:
- rightclick Magicka in your Steam games library
- select properties
- go to local files
- click "verify integrity of game cache"

Done.

mods in magicka? thats hilarious

So, does anyone want me to finish that Tower Defense map? I already spent quite a few hours making the demo and its 25,000 lines of code, but no one gave me any serious feedback regarding it.

On another note, it's good to see my guide featured here, even if I need to format it a bit better in the future. :redwizard::meataxe:

That ^ would be extremely good! My friends and I always come back to this game and to have something new would be wonderful.

Is there a way to access The Stars Are Left magicks in PVP and challenges?

You're that guy from the Youtube video, aren't you? :P

https://www.dropbox.com/s/hr05vtrpdrdvldw/xml%20Codes.txt search for "unlockmagick"
You can find the xml files you have to edit here:
...\Steam\steamapps\common\Magicka\Content\Levels\ Challenges/Versus
Simply copy the code for the magick you want to unlock and paste it in the appropriate file.
For example, if you wanted to unlock the Tractor Pull magick in the Swamp challenge, it would look like this http://puu.sh/h4My5/e6c74358ec.png
I suggest you read through the resources, I'll update the paradox forum links asap.

...You got me.

Oh okay I can do that! But is there a way for them to appear as tomes from luggage? Or is that impossible?

Right now it doesn't seem to be possible, but you can make the tomes spawn during the stage at intervals of your choice.

Hello,

I didn't know there were mods either, it's pretty awesome !

So, if I want to unlock all magicks from the start for Dungeons and Daemons, Vietnam and the other side of the coin (since you can't use save slot for those) what files do I need to edit to add the code to unlock magicks?

I'm going through the files and through their code but it's a bit confusing to know what file refers to what?
[Lemons] w!z@rD Apr 30, 2015 @ 3:31am
Dungeons and Daemons: chs_dungeons_ch1_s1.xml
Vietnam: chs_vietnam_s1.xml
OSOTC: chs_osotc_s1.xml
Mesarthim Apr 30, 2015 @ 3:52am
Nice, thanks :)

So I don't need to edit the s2, s3, s4, ... files? the s1 is enough?
[Lemons] w!z@rD Apr 30, 2015 @ 4:02am
You don't have to edit files for later stages. s1 is enough.
