There should be mod managers availible on the paradox forum for HOI2. they should be compaible.

what is the difference between this and darkest hour? i want to get into the old hoi games as 4 is crap but theres mutiple titles so im confused

Not sure if it makes sense for me to answer, but the general gist as i see it:
Darkest hour has a different map than HOI2, WW1 scenario and lnew events to go with it.
AOD's main goal is to improve HOI2's WW2 simulation as far as possible, including improved logistic, Production, bugfixes and AI.
Both are still beeing worked as far as i know (this one at least is )

After taking a quick look at this, I feel rather guilty for buying it on sale. It seems clearly worth full price, even now, years after its original launch.

Where has this game been all my life? It may be older -- but I find it more interesting and accessible than some other similar games that I will not mention by name, since I appreciate the efforts of developers everywhere.

And it's still been rather recently updated! "Thank you" indeed.

Is there a bug with the promotions? I can promote every leader without skill penalty.

No, that is WAD. It was changed several updates ago - but I agree, I prefer the old system.
