Other than cutting a few trees, you shouldn't need to really do any mining at all.
Make sure you use the iron you start with to make a mining pick as well, otherwise it will take far too long to mine what little you do need (including the trees).
Note that you can use logs as fuel as well as coal, if you have trees in abundance, otherwise save your logs for early game power poles.
Personally, other than trees, for early game I would just plunk your burner mining drill down with a wooden crate right on the output. Wait for it to mine some for you, pick it up, and plunk it down again on the next material you need until you have enough to build another 2 or 3 drills.
Voila, you just got into the fully automated stage of the game and all you ever need to cut manually is a few trees.
