Choose a side on the conveyer via inserters
Am I just overlooking this feature or is there a way to insert inventory on the near side of an inserter? Currently it seems like a pretty basic request and without this you tend to have to do weird work arounds with the conveyer to make it so both sides of a conveyer are double stacked with something like iron plates.

like you mention, when perpendicularly facing a belt, they will place it on the far side. However, when directly facing with or against the belt, they will place it on the belts right side (from our perspective it looks like the right side if going up, left side if going down).
I dont think that'll solve your problems, but it's one extra way the inserters can work, i guess.

Like you mentioned, I think weird workarounds with belts are probably the "easiest" way of getting it done (like having 2 spaces between manufacturers and a curvy road allowing for inserters in the spaces, which would place on opposite sides)

There's a mod for that. Google Factorio mods.

Pretty easy to do with a splitter.

Put the spliter so more of it sticks off the side of the belt that is empty, then have the 2nd belt coming off it curving right back into the main belt to put stuff on the empty side.
for example, on a belt running north,
If everything is on the right side, put the splitter with the 2nd belt on the left. Place 1 tile of belt turning to the right so anythign that goes on it will be put on the left side of the origional belt.
The items will be distributed between both sides of the belt. If one side fills up, all items will go to the other side.

Near Inserters[forums.factorio.com] does what you want.

Thanks for the feedback, this seems like such a basic feature that I was really hoping I was just overlooking it. The game is really well made so I guess at this point I just have to complain about the annoying stuff like this instead of anything really game breaking. I usually run a conveyer across and then loop it back around to the main area I want the item to be on as the current fix as shown by the below image. I tend to always play my main through without any mods of any kind, even one like this which I really really want.
