Factorio has a world-wide copyright on the concept of conveyor belts? huh, interesting news to me.
The copyright owner gets to sue, because copyright violations reduce the copyright owners income. The copyright owner does, in general, not give a damn about "choice" or "gamers" - they just want to collect the maximum amount of money from their intellectual property.
In fact, I like the idea of a competitor to stimulate Wube a little bit. IMHO, they have been mired in an overly-extended period of stressing over minutia. It's gotten boring. I play games and have a job, I cannot be strung along in an endless dev cycle.
I consider Wube visionary in their big and small ideas. I want them to wrap up Factorio and move on to their next big vision already. I have derived far more value than my $20 paid for as it is.
Same with the Epic store. Valve has been ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ up every single thing they have been up to for years now (Artifact? Steam Machines? VR? Hahaha). Epic Games is great for getting Valve off their asses just sucking up cash. I will gladly buy games from Epic.
And I seriously doubt they can sue over similar ideas. No more than first action movie director could sue all the other action movies that followed.
Yes, that's why I said "as things stand".
Actually, I have the following mindset : my budget is limited, which game would I buy ? Which one would I recommend ? A pre-alpha tasteless game, or one that's tons and hundred of hours of fun ?
Of course, as the game evolves, I'll take account of it. But for now, I would never recommend Satisfactory which is more expensive than Factorio and has less to offer. And not because of lack of content, but because of mechanics that make me pull my hair and ask "have they tested their game ? Have they seen how the current master of the genre (Factorio) is handling this and why it works ?
When I first saw the trailer, I had a high expectation towards the game. I wanted to like it, because it was cool to see something new in the area of Factorio-like games. And it is a huge bummer.
That's why I'll be patient and will wait for further updates to revize my review. I want the game to be good and I hope it will be. But for now, it is not
