Can I blueprint module upgrades onto existing buildings?
Let's say I've got a large smelting area and I'm suddenly flush with speed modules. Is there any way to quickly add the modules to the existing buildings without:
A) opening each building individually and adding them
or
B) destroying all the buildings and blueprinting new buildings with the modules in place

Holding any item and CTRL-Left-Click will insert the item into a machine. If it is a module, it will be inserted into the module slot. Holding CTRL-Left-Click as you run along a row of machines quickly inserts the modules into all of them automatically.

I don't know of a way without mods to quickly insert mixes of modules (say, 3 productivity and one speed) into a lot of already placed machines without blueprinting it and removing the old machines. I think the devs ought to allow people to paste a blueprint with recipes/modules in the machines over existing machines to quickly set them, but it's not currently available.

Did this ever change? Or is it still neccesary to destroy and replace in order to use blueprint to insert speed modules?

I just checked. No, placing a blueprint of a building with a module (or using copy-paste) will not insert the modules into an existing building. Not even if the building has no recipe. Trying to do so only results in the recipe being copied into the new building, but not the modules.

Doesn't it cause the building to request the modules from the logistics network though? I swear it does. (This would require robots though)

It will. If you place a blueprint in which buildings have modules in them, first robots will place the building. Then, a new request for modules to be inserted will be added to the job queue. You will see a blue triangle with some kind of icon in it.

It's just a shame that currently you cannot place a blueprint containing modules on top of an existing building and have the module job be placed onto it.

yea I wish I could just easily add 2 efficiency2's into stuff with 3 slots instead of putting in 3 with ctrl or manually inserting 2 without having to delete and paste them.
