how do you research?
Bought a game recently, finished tutorial campaign and moved to new hope. And... it explains nothing. Like few parts of tutorial are missing in between. I only learned how to turn water into steam power and - boom - on next level there is whole factory running, new quest obtained... and you understand nothing.
I found that you can make red skience pack in 3rd tab of your crafting menu. But what s about others? Or they arent necessary? Also how do you open research menu?

Top right corner of screen: "press T to start new research", or click there if you prefer.
Once you're in there it wil show you what kind (colours) of packs you need for what you want to research.

The other packs will be needed later ingame as you progress; they all go in the research lab(s), You can have multiple running at once to speed things up.

"It explains nothing"

How about using your eyes, it's literally right there in front of you.............

The tutorials are being re-done for the final release. Most of us are looking at them with the eyes of people who have spent hundreds of hours in the game. It's hard for us to realize that things that seem obvious to us might not be obvious to new players. New player input is actually DESPERATELY needed to get the tutorials sorted out properly. It's OK to hold new players hands and tell them where to click in a tutorial. That's what they're for.

I actually remember the first time I played the tutorials -- I never fully realized that the game was about automation. I built almost everything by hand in my inventory, instead of using assembly machines. I was vaguely annoyed that it took so long to make stuff, but I didn't realize that annoyance is, in factorio, an indication that you're probably "doing it wrong."

That is not entirely accurate

However, I am pretty sure that the the research menu used to pop up automatically when you placed the first science lab, so the tutorials used to work but haven't been properly updated.

now I see. But its really hard to find. Should be some pop-up with information about how to open research menu, rather than information on part of ui, you never used before

FWIW, I didn't see the "press T" message at all until I came to this thread. All the other tutorials were in bubbles. I even tried clicking the graduation hat and other icons trying to find it.

Also a tip: If you dont know how to open a specific screen or use some shortcut, or even just dont know which shortcuts are there, you are probably best advised to hit ESC, go to controls and look at the controls available. I was largely unaware of a lot of stuff as well when I started out. A quick look at the controls screen cleared up all of the issues I had.

Dont hesitate to ask here though, we will assist you with everything as long as you ask :)

the text location of notification for research is aligned with the old prompting method, and should probably be updated to fit new gui.

I have never used the tutorials. First check the Steam guides for Factorio, and then check the many youtube videos that cover this.

Woah, why the hostility?

How on earth do people end up necroing threads like this? I would understand if they were having the same issue and ended up in an old thread via google while searching for answers. But how do people end up in really old threads giving answers to problems that are no longer relevant.
