To avoid making mistakes, there is actually a console command that lets you disable handcrafting; this command doesn't disable achievements.
It's been a while, but I think you hit ~ to bring up the console and then use the "/permissions" command to bring up a menu. I forget exactly what you choose.
it used to be a bit higher before they let the first assembler be able to craft everything instead of being limited to 2 input slots, and the blue one to 4 (meaning you used to have to handcraft 1 blue and a refinery later in the game)
so roughly 7-8 mistakes
so you could make a 2nd furnace early on and mine ore by hand while the drill and 1st furnace work
The only real challenge is the early game (because it's very slow off of 1 furnace and 1 drill) and personal restraint if you didn't use the /command
Also if you don't feel spoiled about the dolphin yet, save the game before launching your first rocket then examine the achievement again.
