Way of the Samurai 4 is a lot more polished and a better full game, but considering the differences between the two which you might enjoy more is highly subjective.
So it depends what sort of game you are looking for. 3 is more ''Samurai straight'', and 4 is more ''half Samurai straight, half comedy''
The story is very serious in 3, and half serious (but still with a serious plot) in 4.
3 Is more oldschool where you have to find out for yourself where to go, and in what order.
4 Has a flowchart that lists the events available on each day-segment. (but only after you unlock them, otherwise its just shown that there's an event there, not which one)
3 has active time, where times passes during everything you do (including no-name npc dialogue), and 4 has day-segments (afternoon, evening, night) and time only progresses if you do a story event.
Gameplay-wise...4 has some improvements over 3, like you can carry more weapons, etc.
As far as endings go, Way of the Samurai 3 has more endings, but mostly variations. Way of the Samurai 4 has less endings, but they are mostly unique ones.
If both sound pretty good to you, you can always get them both. But if you do I would advise playing 3 first...otherwise you might feel the gameplay/gamedesign to be a downgrade from 4.
