Does apocalyptic difficulty actually do anything in the first half of the game?
I haven't noticed any differences. I started a new save and am in the mines area. Nothing seems harder than it was before on my normal save.

a bit more enemies, and everything hurts a bit more.

Enemies definitely do cause more damage and they come in greater numbers too.

I've played both in Normal and in Apocalyptic. The difference in damage taken and enemy numbers is considerable.

On any difficulty below apocalyptic, the number of static enemy spawns that are active scales with the number of players. When playing solo, apocalyptic makes a HUGE difference in how many enemies will spawn.

The biggest difference is that apocalyptic difficulty ignores playercount check for enemy spawns. Every possible spawn will be enabled as if you had a full server.

For solo play the number of enemies are increase. You encounter as much as group would. IT looks to me as if they also are a bit faster in their reflexes and hit harder.
As long as you’ve played through some of the game Apoc is more a benefit a detriment. Slightly more enemies and faster respawns are great when farming for items to tech up.

Most everything before reactors will die to a Mugnade or two if something’s tough, or Slushies are 3/$1 so cheesing those isn’t even bottlenecked.

Reactors will be harder, but laser weaponry at that point handles everything
