Optimum base?
So I commonly use the one room you emerge into for a base, but are there options that beat that?
I've seen up to after the dam, pretty for sure, but I'm curious if I can safeground like the whole cafe and use that rather than cram.

You can go as big as you want or small. Need to block more spawns? add more Crafting benches

optimum base doesnt exist.

the overall "best" early game location is the security office on level 2 no contest as you can access it quickly right after defeating the first peccary by killing 2-3 robots to make the hacker and all you need for that is 1 single chop. but once you get teleporters this loses value aswell.

you don't need much to a base to complete the game. You can get everything done with a small room and a few large chests if you really wanted to.

You can safe guard basically anywhere with workbenches, traps, and spawn suppressors. Once you get the upgrade for the bench to block invasions the only real threat is tentacle waifu and fog peeps. Both have tech you can add to deal with later too.

That said if you want to go big the Mirror portal world is very large with no spawn issues and not effected by weather events. It does have some invisible walls but its bigger then any other place you could build. You will have to make a power network as there is only one plug. But you dont need any lighting or the such as it is full bright all the time. Personally I have build my portal hub there as moving my whole base from around the plaza fountain is just more trouble then I want to deal with.

there are exactly three locations that i consider 'optimal' for bases
the first (and earliest to find) is the observation room on level 3, with the windows that show the flathill portal, which is right next to the break room kitchen and a robot spawner. the robot doesnt path into the room and if you stay away from the windows at night, wont see you, and it will stomp anything hostile that wanders by for you

the second and easily the best non portal world base is the security office on level 2 of offices. tons of space, multiple power plugs, bathroom right next to it, security shutters that block base raids, a 2nd story, you literally cannot go wrong with this location, ever. its so good that i almost think the devs made it specifically for it to be used that way. even has a coffee machine and a built in recharger.

the third is the world inside the mirror, but this is portal world and only has 1 power plug
office cafeteria as it is called

I just stay at the swimming pool on the office sector then later on i build in the power service dark energy area, they designed it and its meant for players to live inside.
In offices there are a few really good spots, especially once you realize that base raids in this game are really easy.

*The tiny conference room and nearby balcony overlooking office lobbies; up the stirs from Warren. Nothing goes up to walk in that area, you tuck your storage in that room and let your stuff overflow a bit.

*Ontop of the little office in Data, beware the broken knees. While it's a fantastic spot, you run into the issue of constantly falling down and breaking your legs.

*The little gym in Data. It's cramped, but you can flow out into that locker room or the pool. Fantastic access to fishing.

I'm using the scenic area at the back of data. 2 plugs, vending machines, and a charger nearby.

It looks like I'll be REALLY close to a late game area.

But I'm thinking the backside of the tram might be a good base if you can figure out a way to build a walkway to get from the A to B side without going all the way around.

The better you get at this game the more you come to appreciate larger open spaces and ease-of-navigation. The security office in Offices has a lot of new player friendly features but when you realize you don't need the shutters because base raids are incredibly easy to deal with the only other defining feature is the coffee machine. Charging stations can be crafted later. the toilet is a noob trap (you'll need that feces if you want to use mugnades), the lockers need to be labeled with signs if you want to organize, vehicle navigation will either need detours or finnicky ramp placements, and you only ever need one outlet as long as you're willing to put in the effort to do some wiring.

I just use the starting cafeteria until static teleporters, then I move to gm_flatgrass (world in the mirror). All the negatives of WitM are negated by putting in the effort to set up a portal network.

There is a lot of contesting to that. The level 2 Security Office is way overused and people have found many other viable locations for a base with more space and other amenities.

I think it's about time we stop recommending the Security Office as "the only good base option". Personally, I think the Plaza and the Vehicle Depot are far better options.

If it helps, I have compiled a guide for the best base locations (even though "best" is still subjective). The guide is still yet to be updated with the new update but there are plenty of locations in it.
