In flathill’s safe zone or in the GATE offices
In the ceiling area of the furniture store
Though all said and done, I personally think you’re better off just keeping teleporters handy for your main base. Maybe set up your primary base in the starting area cafeteria to be central to pretty much everything?u

tl;dr the place you start in (cafeteria) is not bad but your options rapidly expand once you find teleport tech.
defenses are great for farming, making sure your other stuff doesn't break and so on.
The starting location is decent enough, but here's my picks. Note that I have my Main Base in the Security Office over Manufacturing, so I'm gauging a lot of locations by how easily I can reach here and how convenient they are for their distance.
1: The Guard Shack in the Foyer, by the trams. Requires Level 1 Clearance, but only has 1 entrance, wide open space, and with a jump pad can access the roof with ease. Teslas work wonders. Central to everything. Can become cramped inside, but I prefer cozier rooms. I'm making several small bases in this solo world right now. Super easy to defend, save for portal storms. Make sure all the portals spawn outside before entering the base, until you upgrade your bench to stop them.
2: The Security Office over Manufacturing. Almost perfect. Requires Level 1 Clearance. Famous for it's vibes, tons of space, tons of storage, closing shutters, and fair distance to Manufacturing and the Trams. There is no water nearby, you'll need to shuttle some. Build your bench to the left of the Charging Station, across the locker room door. This will cover the ENTIRE office, ending at the stairs to the back door. A nearby freight elevator will take you straight to The Far Gardens. It is, however, a bit of a walk to and from other locations. Use a vehicle or other method of transport.
3: The Pool. I have an entire base crammed into the Restroom of the Pool, bot doesn't seem to notice it at all while in there but will absolutley see anything outside of there. Blade traps work wonders, but need maintenance. Infinite water, Kitchen wit a repairable stove, it's basically right next door to a tram and a staircase to Level 3 can be unlocked through a secret path nearby Easy access to Foghill . There's tons of space, tons of storage, basically just as central as the Cafeteria you start in. Lots of fun little ratholes to build in around there. More difficult to defend. I recommend moving here later when you unlock Teslas. Note: There's a secret area in the offices where the bot spawns in. Trust me, it's worth it.
You can basically build anywhere you want, mind you.
In Manufacturing:
1: Right above the F.O.R.G.E. Requires Clearance Level 2. Good space, free from danger, Bot doesn't come close. Right next to water, the Forklift garage, the nearby restroom, nearby charger station, and the Tram to the Office Sector. Trader is your landlord. Close enough to basically everything, including the teleporter to Labs.
2: The freight Elevator to the Overlook of the Reactor. In the office with an Audio Log, directly connected to the garage, you will find a freight elevator. This goes to the Overlook, where a lone soldier is stationed. Only one entrance, but no door. The Overlook itself is radiated, so it's not good to hang around it, but the lower level is just fine. Worth it for the view, but take Iodine and a suit. You can build over the dead body in the upper level, which also unlocks the Manufacturing Uniform A corner table a fridge look nice there.
3: The Tram Station next to Anteverse XI. There's soldiers here, and you'll need to progress to it, but it is right next to the trams station, a restroom, has lots of space, and is not too difficult to drive around from. Not a clear best spot for the Bench here, you'll always miss a spot, but I have mine in the office by where the medic spawns. Enemies will stop spawning if they are too close to a bench, but if you miss a spot, you'll have guests to deal with in some spots.
I'll be honest, it's a bit harder to find good spots in Manufacturing. The area is expansive and not a lot of appealing spots are easy to defend or reach. The Upper Level of the FORGE is easily the best location here, IMO, but I'm open to suggestions. I've got 6 bases around, I'll gladly make a few more in Manufacturing.
In Labs:
1: The Viewing Room, next to Lift Access. You'll need to work your way here and unlock a good amount of doors, but there is not a better spot in the Labs. It is right next to the vehicle entrance to Offices, leads directly out to CX or the rest of the floor, and is as stones throw from the rest of the region. The windows unlock to allow you to enter the theater. Bot doesn't come here on it's own, it's incredibly easy to defend with Shock traps. Fish in a barrel. The room itself is large, clean, and has power. Solid outpost for this sector. I'm still going through this section, though, so there may well be another good spot, but I find this one hard to beat. It's right next to shortcuts to the rest of the sector and is nice enough already.
- Office level 2 security office
- Manufacturing West Auto garage tool room (behind forklift spawn)
- Laboratory Containment Security Office (on level 2 (level 3 enter through the breached cell))
So far those 3 locations have been my go-to areas for all 3 areas and they've worked pretty well.
Only drawback is that the laboratory containment area has no charger or toilet but at that point in the game you should be able to craft both so it's not an issue.
I've tried a handful of different spots overall but the most convenient and futureproof-feeling spot is just the starting cafeteria. Being able to use beds as a forward respawn instead of a home marker is a bonus.
Plaza in the Office Sector, honestly hard to beat this location. Centralized so you have shortcuts to almost everywhere else, there is a source of water nearby for filtering water, lots of space, there is a charging station nearby, vending machines nearby, lots of wall sockets to use and you can also set up traps to farm the nearby robot. If you wanna get the Rat Pack and the Rat Suit, there is also a Lab Rat that spawns nearby which you can farm. You only need 2 things: make sure your base isn't close to the robot's patrolling route (the small area with Warren and the computer is safe) and place a Chopinator turned towards the stairs that go up to level 2 since occasionally a Pest will come down from it, but this is also a good source of ingredients for certain recipes.
Otherwise, later on in the game when you reach Manufacturing, you'll at some point go through a portal that takes you back to the tutorial area. This area has lots of space and you never have to worry about roaming enemies, only about the occasional raid.
So far the top floor of the ZFStore is working out for me, but I suppose I'd be willing to undertake the pain of moving everything again if a more compelling location shows up in a new update. It has it's small annoyances, but out of all the other options it's currently the least bad for my personal tastes.
