Your best bet is to restart your game, since it does tend to stop working after awhile, set up an X-Ray turret (or two) at your base, and do some sorting or redesigning of your base.
It should show up every 15 minutes or so and if you just let it approach, it will get zapped by the turrets.
I've found he doesn't even drop an essence every time. The last time I zapped him he disappeared with nothing left behind. So I guess I should find pieces to make a couple of Xray turrets, and then wait about 45 minutes, switching the game on and off, for the last three drops....
Maybe this is less annoying when playing with a group but, as I said, this is the biggest and most dramatic drop in progress/time I've encountered. Thank god it didn't pop up earlier or I might have given up on the game.
Though, I didn't recommend it because by the time you grow one I feel as though you should have already gotten the stuff you need to progress.
Also, I like how the OP's post made it sound like the game made no attempt to tell him that X-Rays hurt the Leyak
But yeah, the game does absolutely tell you that X-Ray is its weakness.
I always keep an X-Ray tower in my base since it appears for me often and by the time I get to the section that requires 4 of them, I had loads of Essence in stock already.
You see and get the plans for the X-ray turret even before you enter the area. Why didn't you build it once you go the mats? (even just out of curiosity) I'm not even close to the control center and have already multiple more essences than I need only from the turrent at home.
This is a bug or you are looking at him before the gun gets him. He ALWAYS dropped an essence for me.
Much of this wouldn't have been an issue if Leyak didn't suddenly get shy and go poof half the time. And I think that changed happened because of people complaining about being ambushed by it.
I am wondering how the stats look on the devs side. Have the deaths by Leyak went down?
I keep an x-ray turret hooked up in the middle of my base with a battery charge and I get about one essence a day passively from that just doing crafting or farming tasks, but it could be more or less depending on the layout of your base and where the leyak spawns. My base is typically in the office security room, so sometimes the leyak will spawn way in the distance by the robot and despawn by the time it can pathfind to me.
Also yeah, there's at least two eye seeds in the labs that you don't need to exchange for, and the eye fruit itself decons into a lot of seeds as well so you can mass produce if you wanted to.
I understand your frustration, but there is little to generalize about it.
1. You encounter two bugs. It should spawn regularly and it should always drop an essence when using the gun. They should be fixed and few people have these. Remove these bugs from your experience and think about it again.
2. Is there really nothing you can do in the meantime? Get some furniture, farm some mats, cook, explore something. There is usually always something to do. And when you leave the base, just take the gun and a battery with you.
3. The game even gives you an item to speed up the encounters
I recently recorded and submitted an instance of Leyak not dropping that ball when hit by the X-ray lamp. I heard it, moved closer, saw it, looked away, got the lamp out, hit it with the light, approached, and it gave nothing as it quickly disappeared.
I think I has something to do with already triggering it to leave before the lamp counts as working. Leyak is now really sensitive to being stared at and approached. So much so that you can run right up to it around a corner, trigger it to attacking, and it disappearing half a second into the attack. I've literally had that happen a couple times or so.
