Similar games
For the people who love Vampyr what are some other games that you love that are similar to this one? I can remember Sherlock Holmes - Crimes and Punishment and the Council (altho i never finished the council.. too slow) :)

If you mean detective games, the one that comes to mind is Observer, which is a trip. If you mean third person action games, the list is endless. I'd check out Observer if you haven't and you're into solving a mystery.

Sherlock Holmes - The Devil's Daughter was also good. You might also like the Telltale games, there are a bunch but they are all pretty well done. Vampire the Masquerade - Bloodlines is definitely worth a look if you haven't played it. The Batman Arkham series is another good one. You could also like the Dishonored games.

Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines for sure! There are a lot of similarities. Just get the unofficial patch tho!

(Also the sequel to VtMB is coming early next year... but who knows how it turns out)

Not sure what parts you liked or hated.

If you liked they stories/mysteries behind people/interactions,interesting folklore/culture,the fight against an unseen enemy (plague in this case, although they sort of personified it),wondering"what ifs"&the choices matter issue...I'd suggest Pathologic.

&besides all the things I love (&dont) about the Pathologic, the 2nd remake comes with a difficulty slider for all kinds of things,so U can adjust it exactly as you want instead of trusting the Devs know what your personal"regular','east/story"and"hard"modes would.

It caught on slowly by word of mouth,& eventually enough heard of it &begged to at least et a remake of the 25 yr old game for a wider language audience.A GoFundMe was started &they got enough to do not only that, but also remake/re-create the game.So there are actually 2 pathological games, the original,(Pathologic HD) &the helpfully named"Pathologic 2'- a"revisioning"/ recreation of the original has expanded story, great graphics, more quests etc. After you play one character, you can play another- their paths cross,so when one character has to do something, the other character may see it &this can alter their relationships,as well as how locals in the town treat you.So very choices matter &also characters"interactions- not just NPC like in Vampyre, but the 3 characters you can play (or will be able to when the new episodes for the new re-created game comes out (currently it is just Haruspex, but still excellent &I cant wait for the next 2!

Both Vampyr &both Patholoic HD & 2 are mostly open worlds with a story line to follow- although you are free to take or reject side quests &the like.An interesting thing I recall from interviews w/the devs is that DontNod said that according to a study, most players play to be good guys/heros,even if they dont have to...thus,some of what is in Vampyr that throws people, the game WANTS you to make a bad choice &then Ohno how to fix this, when increasing powerful monsters after & guards are coming...its supposed to WANT you to eat people to"win"the game without endless grinding,Meanwhile, the Devs from IcePick Lodge said that most people are about winning the game....yet you actually do better if you'fail"at pathologic at least a few times....it gives you alot more insight into what is goin on (&you will always be able to come back, just like in Vampyr, but some of your vitals bars will be a little shorter. There are no"monsters"in Pathologic,at least not like in Vampyre (there are some inhuman creatures though important to the game.

BTW,both the Vampyr &Patholoic games have the the main enemy being a plague of some kind. Both have lots of NPCS,some with interesting stories,&whose lives are intertwined so that if you hurt person X,person Y miht be pretty pissed at you & do soemthing to get back...There are street fights but full disclosure, you have either a butcher knife or a surgical scaple as a weapon,or your fists...no one levels up (at least on not the terrified,starvin,under-lockdown citizens....the national guard comes in thouh eventually,&you get to help them so say in deciding how the fight the plague to keep it from spreading.Anyway your character isnt a street fighter,so do it only if/when absolutely needed, dodge alot (where'd I hear that before)and/or get out of there A FAST That said, hardly Aanyone ever complains about the messed up fihting...it just isnt the point of the game,&the fans know this.

Pathologic has IMHO better writing &choices (less amusing puns that Vampyr though, but that may be due to it being first written in Russian,as there are russian puns in it).Pathologic (both versions) take place on the Russian or mongolian (or someplace around there) steppe in an old town- set around 1900-1910ish (so not far off from DR Reid's time)...however,they mix-match things as they feel like if it seems like it improves the scenes- for example,Art Nouveau Artwork that wouldnt become popular for some time later, gass street lights (in a non-name tiny villae in the middle of nowhere in pre or post USSR...Nonetheless,most agree the mix-n-match time period material keeps it both, anchored in the past, yet not STUCK in it,to become"untimely"after people loose their interest in the time period. The lore in Patholoic is very extensively thought out &takes a bit from central & eastern european, mongolia, etc.

Saving- you can save at various check in points at any time; there are also some cheats you can access by pressing the right kepys/buttons,so that you can can save from anyplace in the world, request food if you are starving, etc & as said, there's difficulty sliders so you can customise the game to your prefrences.

As in ANY game, there are going to be things I like/don't like, would change if I could etc Over all,I like Vampyre.I see lotsI'd fix or change, but they do not get me upset. If they remade Vampyre or made a sequel,I would really hope they look at IcePick Lodge's approach to it- IMHO they really got most things right, fixing what players complained of,expanding the lore they couldnt fit into the first game,& expanding the types of choices/options/ethins you can do to handle situations.Persoanlly i could care less if they'improved"the street fighting, since i dont play for that,& its not really what the game is about.

If you choose to try either version of Pathologic (HD or #2),then I would say, start with HD (origianal that was remasterd with language barriers fixed) *IF* you do not mind"old school"style games or graphics. If you think that'd turn you off, then start with Pathologic 2 which is the newly're-imagined"one.you do NOT have to have played the first one to play the sedcond. If you want to know more about the 1st game, without playing it,I'd sugest reading the 3 part link below,and/or looking g/for play-thrus on youtube etc.Its just 2 different experiences- in one,you know the story line, you know more about the other characters (that will get their own games in the future) etc.But jump into the more recent re-imagined game,& everything is wonderfully new- new an strange & lots of other things I cant think of words for atm. Some who played the 1st say they are jealous of those coming to play the new Pathologic 2 without the experiene of the 1st because it is so well done they wish they could experience it for the 1st time too.

Here are the links, they didnt fit in above post....

From an article on the introduction of the re-created game (patholic 2)

https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2019/06/24/pathologic-2-has-the-best-intro-ive-played-all-year/
in the Theatre, light is drawing my attention to the bodies in the centre, rigid as toppled mannequins.I feel less like an actor staring out, more like an audience member....

Something is making me more pay attention than I normally would. If you play enough games, you become so familiar with certain objects that they become invisible.Ladders are for climbing.Crates are for smashing.A chair in amongst a room full of clutter is part of the clutte.... Gazing out from a stage at an audience of bedridden plague victims invites consideration of both the theatre & the hospital, both things that might slip by largely unexamined without this sort of juxtaposition...Pathologic 2 is speaking in a language I recognise, but with an unfamiliar accent. It’s making me listen more intently,& I’m picking up on things I might otherwise miss..... I look at my inventory screen & see the silhouette of the hulking, barely human shape that represents my character that I realise that my character is as much a product of this place as I,as the player,am an intruder on it.

& one more on the latest version of it:

if “fun” is on one extreme of the video game emotional spectrum,Ice-Pick Lodge’s Pathologic 2 is on the other. It drops you in...a remote town on the Russian steppe, ravaged by mass hysteria & plague, you feel desperate & hopeless, struggling against a force you don’t underst&& cannot seem to overcome so much as momentarily stave off...People die in the streets, their houses,& the makeshift hospital cobbled together in the theater.Plague districts are cordoned off & marked by great bonfires. The army arrives, prepared to purge. For this isolated village,it feels like the end of the world,& you feel it in your bones because the game constantly places you on edge through its harsh survival mechanics...

Each new day provides new events, new conversations,& new leads on certain mysteries [but]you must constantly weigh the need to finish certain events before nightfall...Is it worth it to take a detour to a shop,to trade with kids playing in a yard,or to root through an abandoned house?....

All the same, there’s seemingly no “right” way to play Pathologic 2.Its design philosophy is totally antithetical to the mainstream, prioritizing the embrace of failure & the stirring of emotion over linear forward progress meant to feel traditionally “good....[G]athering herbs allows you to brew tinctures that can be used for diagnostics, but tinctures as well as antibiotics can be traded & sold just like anything else,[yet take time to collect & then make]....So you’re forced to choose which lives are most valuable,& it feels horrible to end up choosing yours over & over again.
{So you're no vampyr,but you still have to balance choices about who lives/dies - me :-) }
As these different elements converge,it feels as if a community’s entire being has been crammed into Pathologic 2.You grapple with the town’s economics, keep up relationships, save lives,&peel back what layers of the place’s dark history that you can. It’s one of the most stunning examples of a game as a cohesive whole,as every aspect is tuned for maximum stress &horror—an atmosphere of imbalance &overhanging dread that’s enhanced by the eerie,ever-clanging score...Few games are as transportive as this,&fewer still will leave players so utterly convinced that they never want to see such a place for as long as they live.
[/i/]
And now for reviews on the original version (Patholic HD)
[/iIf you want to play (or just know about what happens in the oriinal 2004 version (which will give you lots of spoilers, yet at the same time,so much is new/different,without strayin from the oriinal story line, that it shouldnt ruin your enjoyment of the re-created Pathologic 2...

(yes that is in order even though the first one as a more recent date due to their republishin it in anticipation of Patholoic 2)

As the author says in part 2:
...games have incredible untapped potential in the field of negative emotions.Just as the lowest common denominator of any art form appeals to ‘positive’ emotions, whether it’s humour, arousal or excitement,so it is that our young games industry is obsessed with the idea of ‘fun’.

I think this is one of the core reasons that the games industry hasn’t had its Casablanca or Citizen Kane- we’re still in the era of musicals &slapstick comedy. No games developer’s going to try &make its audience feel sad,or lonely,or pathetic,at least not for long stretches...
But that debate is just a big, ugly thorn bush that I’ve run through too many times already with nothing to show for it.The point is that Pathologic fearlessly wields desperation, brutality, hopelessness, exhaustion, cruelty, even ignorance &pain, and,if you can stomach it,the result is phenomenal.
Pathologic could not ever be described as fun.Tramping back &forth across town, trying to stem the torrent of deaths while aching to know what’s going on is not fun. This is not a game. There isn’t a word for it really, which is probably why the developers,Ice-pick Lodge, call Pathologic “an exercise in decision making” on their translated English website.

There’s a good chance I’m losing you here.Let me use a couple of lovely, colourful examples to illustrate the kind of power Pathologic has.

I played through the game at the same time as a friend. He chose the Bachelor,&I was the Haruspicus.Because we played at the same rate,we had the chance to discuss developments in the plot each day. This went wrong fast.w

“WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING?” he asked me after we’d both finished day three.

It took me a few seconds to figure out he was referring to the Haruspicus. In his game he’d been sent to investigate a body of one of the infected citizens that had been sliced open &left in the street,&his investigation ended up pointing to me as the perpetrator. But there was no evidence as to why I’d done it.Whereas in my game, yeah,I’d snuck up on a doomed man &cut him open, but I knew it was justified. For thousands of years the Haruspicus had held the right to open the dead in situations like this; what I’d done was the most natural thing in the world. To try &save the thousands of men, women &children in the town who were at risk,I’d brought one death on just a couple of days early.Sue me.

“I needed to see the infected organs” I told my friend, realising as I typed that this defense probably wouldn’t hold up in court.

We bickered for a while, each of us oddly firm in the beliefs of our own characters. He called me a murderer,&I called him pathetic. We left it at that.

When I was playing the game the next day I ended up going to a meeting with the Bachelor. The NPC called me a murderer,&our characters bickered. He wanted nothing to do with me.He said that,as doctors,we could never be justified in killing people. Goosebumps!
