Whom did you give it to? I tried both options and it seems there is no immediate effects making them identical. There might be something later down the story but I highly doubt it will have any meaningful impact.

If you give it to Mortimer, he pays you some money (I think it was fifty shillings) and it opens up the dialogue options for him. I didn't try it with his mum, so I'm not sure if there's a difference...
