The sun is rising but is just illuminating the sky?
Back on topic - in one of the text you can find info what sun doesn't kill vampires, but burn them to bones, but they can regenerate after that. In VTMB sunrise means insta death for you.
In Vampyr lore only direct sun rays hurt vampires, turn them into smoking bones but later, when darkness comes, they regenerate and revive.
And In the last chapter Dr. Reid says he has to hurry because the sun is raising, showing he is uncomfortable with the situation
Perhaps, pushing it back to earlier dawn or just before, then getting into the castle could have even been a timed puzzle, a little break from all the dialogue at the end.
The "direct sun" thing it's ok to me (although I really prefer the Vampire: the Requiem 2nd edition mechanic), It enhances a bit vampires' survivability, allowing more freedom in story development... and also opens more scenarios in my mind: for example, in a cloudy day there's no direct sunlight (but clouds can move away...)
By the way, at first I really thought that in the last chapter, the sun was really rising as in a timed puzzle ! I was so charmed by the location that I lost focus for a moment. I even wrote a post here some times ago about it
The fact that you walk outside is a spoiler?
thats a good point i hadnt thought of with the shelters (and even in the castle with its windows)
I did at first think the castle ending was a timed puzzle too, and I think it would have been more exciting had it been.
We can see at night (and presumably vampires can do so better) due to light that reflects off the moon (plus what little comes from the stars- which the sun is)... and of course they can go out at night. So presumably it is only /direct/ sunlight, not reflected sunlight (or gaslamp light, etc) that will hurt them. There was even a letter in Lady Ashbury's castle from a friend who agreed to accommodate her delicate health condition that required she not be out beyond dawn or before dusk supporting this
