Some of this I'm just copy&pasting at this point.
Its nothing more than to lead the player with little to on meaning other than to force value in the multiple ending BS.
NURSE CRANE.
So. You've found out all the information availible about Nurse Crane and your objective is to stop the blackmail.
Dr.Swansea has asked you to help the hospitals main benefactor in response of being asked if he wants the threat eradicated: "By the stole of course not."
Lady Ashbury even said "Prove yourself capable of resolving my predicament without eating the culprit." But I'd like to not kill her anyway so since I've unlocked it I'll choose "Charm" that sounds like it should stop the blackmail and keep her alive.
So job well done, everyone is happy.
BAZINGA!. Wrong. You broke her tiny female brain with big thoughts, now she'll become a Skall and ♥♥♥♥ up the District.
At least Lady Ashbury will be happy the blackmailing stopped. But what would of happened if I "Spared" her and let her live without stopping the blackmail you ask. Nothing. NOTHING.
Upon informing Lady Ashbury that you failed to stop the blackmail "O tats like TOTALLY noayt whut I whanted. Butt I'm like so OVA it noa like anyway."
Then she returns to the storyline as her tiny female brain forgets about all those pesky big thoughts and it is NEVER MENTIONED AGAIN.
As an additional note:
When talking to Lady Ashbury about the blackmail problem you can ask "Why not solve this yourself" and she'll answer with "The blood would run like a river. Thats what I hope to avoid."
but a moment later she is asked if she knows where you should start yet replies
"If I knew that I'd handle this situation myself." then tells you where to START!.
Then the other "important" NPC choice was Dr.Swansea found beaten and dying, you are presented with the three choices: Let him die, Kill him or Turn him.
All but one option has him die. I must of missed something, I thought Dr.Reid was a DOCTOR. A surgeon no less, with experience on the frontlines.
Yet I have no option to heal him in anyway, just nope "Ur rekt m8. lik ur mum. Init."
Not much of a choice when two of the three choices are: He Dies.
"Everybody Dies. F^ck'em."- Dr.Reid, world renown surgeon.
Hell, you can outright mind control people, but you can't use that to stop them doing whatever evil crap they're up to? That makes no sense.
Not to mention all the people you catch doing whatever, and you get no real options to turn them in or even tell them to stop. Like the murderer who you can basically chat about how many people they kill... but you don't get any options to mess with their head and make them stop. Of course, you could kill them to stop their murder spree... but that somehow makes everything far worse for the district. o_O
Dr. Swansea did self-diagnose and state several injuries he has, that cannot be ''healed'' at the spot at the basement of a theatre without any medical equipment; such as internal bleeding, for God knows how long and stated that it is already too late.
I agree with the contradicting and conflicting points and statements of characters within the story though. It'd have made sense if they actually showed some sort of tutorial beforehand explaining the consequences or hints about them depending on the type of choice you can pick.
I personally think the story that Vampyr has is 'okay', but what really got me interested is the universe's lore by reading the notes and collectibles. The secrecy and the remaining questions I have regarding the more so unnatural aspect of the 'disease' made me crave more; The actual story they let us go through wasn't as interesting.
I also wished they had focused more heavily onto the whole ''being a doctor'' aspect of the game. Rather than just being recognized by the majority of the NPCs as some famous surgeon, there wasn't really anything in-game that represents it.. Aside of making medicine and a few dialogue options?
They also should've made the NPCs and the whole Embracing feature more 'pressuring', if that's the right word. I personally ran through a pacifist run for the sake of being a morally ''good'' guy and the achievement; even though I wanted to Embrace some of the NPCs that I thought was bad, but ended up not doing it.
However, I wish they fleshed out the NPCs WAY more, cause I had no bond whatsoever with any character and even late-game-ish, I did not care much about their dialogue cause they felt not unique at all? It felt more so as scripted filler characters than characters that actually have their own opinion and view of the world, thus making them unique and getting to really /know/ them.
A thing I don't understand is, like 90% of the NPCs are oblivious that these are vampires of the sort and assume they're just barbaric/psychotic people that went crazy over the Spanish flu.. Even though there's a whole faction that is known to hunt vampires and other creatures in the area, along with collectibles and posters regarding vampires.. The vampires/Skalz use abilities that are unnatural etc.. There are even different branch/breeds of species of vampires that'd be considered ''werewolves'' (Also hoped they'd have went into this breed more specifically, regarding lore/story etc..). Yet people still think they're just 'sick people'..
I mean that bugs me more than anything. How does killing a MURDERER not IMPROVE the region? If you're removing someone who's actively killing everyone, then that should greatly improve that district's condition.
Also he's doing well for someone with a punctured lung.
I'd argue the story and lore is terrible and most likely made up on the spot since its full of plot holes.
The main purpose of the NPCs is to be banks of EXP to "Temp" the player into killing them however since there is no alternative rewards or routes it is not so much a temptation as it is an annoying tease.
The old look but don't touch routine with the ♥♥♥♥♥cat Doll's "Dontcha" roaring in the background.
"War and a Plague that sounds bad... Wait... Did you just assume my pronouns?!"
"This district will now suffer the consequences of your actions."
I played the game from the perspective of a utalitarian and I have a list of people who, in my mind, deserved to be embraced. As the police struggles to get anything done, those characters could possibly even harm, bring misery or kill more people until matters have improved.
Seymour Fishburn: A serial killer on the lose with nobody to stop him. His mother is doing her best, but is unable to actually stop him. Even worse, he treats her badly for caring for Rufus, an orphan. After embracing him, his mother is understandably sad, but a weight is lifted from her shoulders, Rufus gets a roof over his head and a warm bed to slep in. No regrets.
Fr. Tobias Whitaker: He knowingly sent his disciple to his death and burnt people alive in his "crusade". He needs to be put down or he may cause even more harm to the people of Whitechapel.
Carina Billow: Her mind has been broken beyond repair. In her moments of clarity, she begs to be released from this torure. Embracing her may be the most humane action. Also, just a hypothesis, this may be how those giant Beasts lurking in the Sewers are created.
Dr. Edgar Swansea: Lacks in any ethical standards in medical research. He tried and experimental therapy using a lethal pathogen, derived from the blood of another patient, who hasn't consented, on a patient without her consent and caused an outbrake, which has cost the lives of hundreds and could have wiped out an entire city. As this case cannot be resolved by the justice system, he needs to be removed from society or he may put his patients in danger yet again. If he is so obsessed with vampires, he shall be brought down by one.
Maybe I'm just a bad person though...
Fairy(Scary)TaleTimes cites a lot of things that bugged me and really feel like plot holes. Yet I could expand on the storyline that is already there that would resolve most of the plot holes. So if they would have double the width (not the length) of the story and world. That would have fixed a lot of issues. It would also help NPCs feel better.
At first, I felt like NPC were full of character and had depth. After initially talking with them (sometimes through what felt like a little too much BS) I felt like they can be largely ignored. Most seemed like they could be a setup for more than just fetch quests. Yet that is what they feel like now. Healing them for some quick XP is nice. What else are we going to do with the billions of trash loot you pick up throughout the game? They are barely more than a fetch quest for a little more XP. I very quickly stop caring about them. Especially with how repetitive their scripts become. That is almost incentive to eat them.
The district health (DH) being so black and white is a huge failure. With the NPCs morals supposedly gray the DH should be grayer. Example: Killing Cox help prevent him from murdering others. Make all those wounded people laying around in beds matter. Why does Lady Ashe get to eat bedridden people and we don't?! I thought WE were supposed to battle the moral of eating our patients and treating them. Why does the game show us in a cutscene it can be done but never let us do it?!
Districts also become very uninteresting after the main act they are used in. I'm still in the 4th act so obviously, I'm mostly playing in the West district. Other than hitting up the vendors at the beginning of each night (Trying to get the better crafting materials). The other district fell like a waste of time. Unless I want to try my luck at loot respawns and slugging through the enemy grind for a little bit of xp. OMG, I won't even go on about how the combat needs more fleshing out because of my post to damn long already.
Nearly Every Quest Seemed To Be:
So, you've met a guy, you've had a nice chat, he has just told you the long tale about that time he did 100 reps at the gym, which has unlocked a hint.
Its all very important and interesting but you discover that he cant find his lucky jockstrap anymore, without it he just cant do any reps at all!
Detective Reid jumps on the case before the trail gets cold and thus begins his investigation into this tricky fetch quest.
The Following Night later Reid has followed the scent of this sweaty jockstrap to find he is not the only one with an interest in mens athletic wear.
Fighting for keepsies the menace lunges for you but a single swing ends your rival pervert, leaving this treasure unguarded for the taking.
Being a detective'n'all you quickly collect the dropped belongings of the fallen foe only to then learn that the foe was in fact... DUNDUNDUN.
The client's fellow jocky and shower-buddy/occasional"Girl"friend "Hint Unlocked".
Case closed. The jockstrap returned and the world a safer place even 100 bottle caps along with 90 points of experience rewarded for a job well done.
"Its not gay if its away games. Bro!"
It even negates the whole feeding = difficulty concept. They definetely could improve the explanation mid game, so people would have better understanding of what is going on.
They could work on lady ashbury's representation. She doesn't feel likable in the slightest yet the hero somehow falls in love with her from the first sight or something. This is a major plot hole and the reason why people get confused about given options, they don't feel any empathy for her at all...
Also, it seems like a lot of people are into Geoffrey McCullum, even though there wasn't much described about him and no actual interaction whatsoever.. He just makes three appearances that don't last longer than 10 seconds. (Aside of the fight). Yet people are matching him and Reid to become a couple through Reddit pages and discussions???
The actual 'plot' started to reveal near the end of the game/last chapter. Well, atleast the plot that ties in with the lore of the universe which can be figured out through the collectibles and certain dialogue lines.
However it strayed away from the story/goal/point we originally went through, which was looking for a cure to said plague though; which goes back to my previous statement of Don'tNod not actually focusing onto the whole surgeon/doctor aspect of Reid as much as I hoped they would.
It's only there by being recognized as a famous surgeon/doctor by the NPCs and the fact that you can make medicine to cure illness' of NPCs. Yet it doesn't play a significant role at all, even by figuring out what causes the epidemic and how to cure it. (Which got strayed away near the final two chapters)
Reid was chosen because he was a doctor. The blood of hate infected the previous champion william marshal, as he didn't know how to deal with it properly.
Also because he was supposed to have enough will power to not giveup to the urge to feed just like william who starved for centuries to prevent the epidemic from reappearing.
But dr. Swansea wanted to do experiments with vsmpire blood and released the plague, original disease wasn't as serious and could be cured with medication at hand, Reid was not needed for that.
The game is more about playing the role of Reid and doing what he would do and not what the player would want to do. It is a bit awkward situation and raises some questions from players.
What would you expect them to do about the doctor profession? Players wouldn't know how to perform a surgery properly without relevant education, if it were only movies where you had no controll it would just be boring. Also when Reid tryes to operate on a patient he starts losing control because of all the blood and his hunger.
And the fact that Reid loses control when operating on people is, actually, a very interesting complication that could be expressed through gameplay - with a timer before Reid loses it and bites the patient, or maybe you could juggle your surgeon work and your thirst at the same time. The point is, something interesting could be done. Whether it should've been done is not up to me, since "surgeon gameplay" is quite orthodox and I can't say for sure what it's influence would be like on the design of Vampyr.
even if done wiht good intention its still moraly dubious
