is this game similar to vampire : the masquerade bloodlines? ( not the visual novel game, but the old one using source engine )
I know that these type of games are hard to find "Vampyre / Vampire games", and I would like to have played the old game from like 2004 "The masquerade", thou I have bought it, when trying to start it it won´t work.
Anyhow, so I got this game long ago, but now found time to play it. Sadly... I don´t really like it altough in it´s core it is a very good game with a good story and atmosphere.
What took away all the fun of the game was how it was programmed, and how they "toss" you out in the open world without any type of useable tutorial.
When playing story driven games I want my character to survive for as long as possible, but in this game it didn´t take long untill my "undead" vampire somewhat turned "not so undead"... even a few times actually.
It was the lack of help, and they send you foes, that are like many levels above you. If I´m lvl 9, the foes are at least lvl 16... if was one foe ... okay, but it are like 4-5 at the same time.
So... after failing at these groups so often, I lost interest already, but as the game really has an atmosphere to it, and is a bit unique (play as a vampire) I continoued playing it. With more training I managed to "understand" how the combat system does work, and due to that, I managed to be able to defeat groups of guards / foes with my vampire rather well then... I also won the "werewolf" fight in the sewers at the first try, just took ... a little while to win ;)
Still... here is what bothered me most, and where I thought like "seriosuly?"
The vampire can´t jump. There´s an obstacle that´s like 1...2 feet high, but he can´t jump over it ... but "if he wants to" he can teleport like 10...20ft distance from ground level to 1st floor in a building...
Reputation "xP" ... Vampire going out in the night, hunting / fighting for his part of town, for the civilians... in all the fights and encounters he barely gains XP. I checked... defeat 1 foe gives you 10 XP. Then I see the map and it tells me, that if I´d feed on various innocent people it would give me up to 4000 ( I think I read that once) XP for feeding on ONE innocent individual.
Where´s the logic? That makes so no senes at all. Why should these people´s blood give you so much XP, but having actual fights (where the vampire would learn what he is capable of ...) do barely give you any XP.
I know this is intended, I´ve read enough here to know the reason behind it but ... "seriously?"
Then how the game is programmed. I had to meet a nurse (forgot the name... and in the German translation the names were altered anyway). Didn´t take me long to find her. She was talking to a guy in a small boat... but I was not able to get to her. There was a steel bar door, which would neither open, nor was "useable"... I tried to find a way to get to said nurse, but I could not find a way to get to her. From both sides there was no access possible, all that happened is that my vampire got in more trouble, trying to find how to get to her, bc he was seen by guards.
I was at the spot again, at the closed door, and random activated my "vampire senses", and this made it work. Activating the senses triggered something... and a cutscene was shown, where he goes to the nurse, and casually walks through the door.
Later there was another scene, that "worked" absolutely similar like the nurse scene, where "something had to happen to make the game progress" which just really hurt the presentation of the current event.
I think the game even had an issue later. I made medicine to cure the people. Gathering material (and occasionly buying from trader) I had medicine for nearly everything available, be it headache or even blood poisoning. So I made my visits to the patients, and let him see what they have using "F". I got a diagnosis, and one time (...) I was able to give the patient the medicine they needed to heal.
That broke. Later I could still "scan" the patients, and see what they have... and he even had medicine to give to them (1 available). Nothing was red (like 0/1) but he just would not give the medicine to the patient. Clicking at it, only made a very silent sound... but nothing else... even I had "1 available." I tried varios people with different medicine ... but it just stopped working.
Reading this forum then made me confirm the decision to delete it, after not having finished it even one time. It is a great game, really. It has a good story. I like the Idea of the "sub vampire" Types and that you can ask the one lady about stuff and what not... but with all these issues, being punished for being "a nice vampire" ... I had the scene where the hospital boss did meet with the "vampire hunter boss", and the hunter boss annonuced "I´ll double the guards"... no, that was just to much.
Other issues also. It took me a while to figure out how to use the gun he found... usually you can scroll through your weapons, but with the inventory, messing around... Tutorial.. Give the players a tutorial and tell them HOW to play the game, and then let them play the story.
Not sure if I´ll ever return to it. Altough I now know how to even defeat a 4-5 ppl group of hunters, with my vampire, knowing all the other issues this game has...
Alright fellow player. Everything that you quoted was experienced by everyone who played/completed the game. I must tell you that i don't see anything wrong with what you said, it's not a 10/10 game but it did a pretty good job overall. I also missed some hints and side quests because of my stupidity, but that's literally the point of the game. "Your choices really matter", if the game was supposed to be played with a guide, where would the fun go ? Anyways, this game might not be for everyone so i gotta respect your opinion on that one.
Farewell, Reza.
Ratings are rigged though, it's the dev team reviewing it positively.
Wow, do you know this?
