It's a big deal because it woulld have offered much greater variation and vastly improved the experience for a lot of people. If it is clothing only I won't be buying it. Terrible design decision and can't call itself an RPG really. RPG/Adventure or RPG/Action at best without any customisation at all.
Think for example Deus Ex without JC. Or hell, you all love VTM so much? Remove Christophe, make him [Player_Name], the game would have been a lot better.
A player will project himself onto the protagonist regardless of customization. The illusory notion that a character can exist in a story independent of the observer is itself the subconcious projection of an unexamined mind. The idea that a story is better served by a "defined" protagonist is also subjective, like any interpretation of the story.
The entire point is moot because, if a video game is to be used as a medium for story-telling, that will always be secondary to gameplay. This is really an action game with devolved RPG mechanics to be sold to the sedate, idiot masses anyway; not Dostoyevsky's Crime and Punishment.
Disagree. Mass Effect OT is a good example of a balance between set protaganist and character creation. Not ideal but at least you get to play as YOUR Shephard. More choice, more freedom therefore better. More customisation can only ever be a good thing.
