i played the first time trying not to kill anyone. But honestly it's not worth it. The story was really good for me, having to learn about your victims for extra exp is really satisfying.
Turns out I'm actually loving it a lot. The story is as hammy and dramatic as vampire stories should be, the characters are interesting enough... and I'll be brave enough to say it, I'm liking the combat. Going a no kills run (least no kills on purpose, cri) and while there were a couple of tough spots, for the most part playing doctor and completing sidequests rewards enough experience to remain a powerful monster. Gonna become even more demonic if I do a proper playthrough and eat people.
So I absolutely believe you can enjoy it, even as more than just a vehicle for alcohol. It's a fun game!
Maps are done good, very Londonish at 191X, with lil weather variation, gloomy atmo, which I like.
Length: Good, no need 200h+ games, you can run this game multiple times without have to do it as a job.
I'm not bashing on the game but that isn't legitimate reasons why it should be good. Plenty games have the first two down to a T yet still fail so hard cause its buggy/combat sucks/etc.
Thats my motivation problem atm, its.. janky and wouldn't say horrible but its not good.
Do NOT compare this to other vampire games like "Vampire: the Masquerade", the similarity is in the name of the mythical creatures only. TBH I tried "V:tM" and couldnt get into it at all; "Vampyr" however drew me in, and I'd love a sequel or prequel when the studio has more experience to make it better.... or even a 'reboot' of the same game in 10+ years where the jagged edges are smoothed over, bugs fixed, and world expanded (sort of the way Pathologic (also by an Indi studio) was remade as Pathologic 2 (a reboot, not a sequel and absolutely amazing one at that). ( https://store.steampowered.com/app/384110/Pathologic_Classic_HD/
remade to: https://store.steampowered.com/app/505230/Pathologic_2/ )
There are things that could be better for sure, but for an indie game, its quite well done. I havent encountered bugs or combat problems some other people have (and generally, complaints are going to seem more common then they are IMHO for any game, because people are going to complain about them either to vent, or find help/solutions.... while those who have no problems are just going to play and have a good time and then move on to the next game). THe ONLY bug I encountered was in one small sidequest involving the return of a lost scarf- it cuts off one clue for me, and thats it, hardly game breaking. And who knows, maybe on another play thru, with different choices made before that quest, something will untangle itself in the code and it will work next time.
So anyway, re bugs, be aware of them, but i wouldnt be turned away from the game due to them, unless you found the game unplayabe in the first 2 hrs then return it (I always set myself a timer with a new game exactly for this reason)
Until now, combat seemed tedious dodge-hit-run, let stamina fill up, dodge-hit-run... I think this is why people condemn the fight. They've very likely been ingame only several hours.
As for the investigating and keeping the streets healthy - idk, sometimes the game feels over-talkative. But hey, that's completely subjective from me. The atmosphere is thick as heck, the quests and the story seem often pretty enticing.
So far, pretty good game.
PS: I play on Hard, I do jack-of-all-trades build. It probably caused the thing with the combat in the first place. But now I start to enjoy it all the more I suppose?
