Anyway, I did it all in one sitting, yet I had no other option than the one I described.
Okay, that explains it, then.
I see. I'm tempted to just keep the scarf and to H*** with completing the quest. It just annoys me to do everything I can to get things right and then find I did it all for almost nothing. - I may give it to 'him' after all, but it'll be some time later in the game when I've done all the other quests in the area because right now I'm just really pi*sed.
For now the scarf stays in my inventory. Hrmpfh!....lol. - Thanks for your responses, guys, you helped me figure out what's been wrong with this quest. Maybe the devs will fix it for players in the future - we can always hope. :)

P.S.
I know it seems like I'm over reacting, and maybe I am (I do have a temper, although thankfully, when i boils over it is short lived) but that's because other things are trying my patience at the moment by continually refusing to go wrong. Grrrh!
I get your frustration. I really only have time to play through a game once unless I just really really enjoy it so not being able to do get a hint and have no work around without starting over is annoying.
