Basically you just respawn and the progress is reset so you get to try again at whatever it was that just killed you. All npcs are also respawn.
Personally I'm glad it doesn't have a quick save or any other way of saving, cause knowing myself I would probably reload after every "bad" decision. This way, your decisions have some real consequences.
Easy for you to say. Many of us do not have the leisure of being able to restart from the beginning to try out a different choice from 5 minutes earlier.
