how do I equip weapons?

As the title says.
I have the used stake and the machete i get at the start of the game. I have a couple new weapons such as fire arms and others in my inventory, but there is no button or option that tells me how to equip new weapons. When I looked in the keybindings, it said Z and C to alternate melee and ranged weapons, but that isn't changing anything at all. I'd really like to use my pistol.

Open the character screen and there are tabs at the top.

It's a bit confusing, you can't do it from the inventory for some reason, you have to do it from the character panel, click your currently equipped weapon and you'll see all your available options.

I found it a bit before this question was answered, but thank you regardless. hopefully this can help others.

It is the square with the outline of Jonathan's face, on the same menu where you have the map, inventory etc
