What does an NPC being "lost" mean?

I was doing the local investigation "Missing ingredients" at level 4. A hostile NPC found me that was level 14. I kept running to the quest marker to avoid a fight. I ran into a pack of 5 Skals, who brutally murdered the NPC. I managed to save the NPC "Archer Woodbead" after a very long fight disposing of the five skals.

He mentioned his son, Andrew. I clicked select to see information about Andrew, and it says "LOST" in big flashing letters next to his character profile. I'm not sure if this means the NPC got killed somehow or if the NPC is just "lost" somewhere because I haven't discovered him yet. In any event, I'll start over if he's dead :/ Not like I'm that far in the game.

There isn't any living NPC called Andrew - his son just joined the Priwen Militia but isn't in the game (at least i can't recall anything about him).

Pretty sure you lost another NPC, not related to this instance. Is it someone on the Docks or probably (more likely) in Pembroke Hospital who was lost? Because there isn't any NPC in the Eastern Docks - except Archer Woodbead - who can be lost right now in your game.

But how the hell did you run into the Docks during that Quest?! Where have you been - the Missing Ingredients Quests is just right next to the Hospital...

To avoid similar situation (being underleveled and unable to rescue specific NPCs) I wouldn't go exploring too much and stick with the districts you are supposed to do (in your case: Pembroke Hospital, Parts of Whitechapel). But that's just my advice...

Hello,
A NPC is dead when "Dead" or "Embraced" is displayed.
If the NPC is "Lost", you can find him/her somewhere.
(Sometime it's displayed by an exclamation mark)

Truly? I had to kill a level 16 boss named H.G Griffin that was literally standing right next to the chest who could kill me in two hits.

Ok that one you have to beat - but I still don't get why you were in the Docks. The morgue isn't anywhere near the Docks ;)
