Most abilities work for both builds. Best one is stamina. Coagulation is also excellent.
If you're short on EXP, here's how I would break it down:
ACTIVE SKILLS
Coagulation
- yes.
Autophagy
- yes.
Bloodspear/Shadow Mist
- ranged attack. Pick one. Bloodspear is for sniping, Shadow Mist is a mini-stun explosion. I like Shadow Mist for versatility. Requires Coagulation to get the most out of it.
Blood Cauldron/Abyss
- Ultimate skill. pick one. Blood Cauldron has AOE (turns enemy into a blood grenade). Abyss is good for bosses (hits hard, you can get in some free melee attacks, problem bosses weak against shadow).
Blood Barrier
- free shield. Nice if you have spare EXP.
Spring
- ambush melee. Nice if you have spare EXP.
Shadow Veil
- invisibility. Nice at the beginning. Then most enemies that matter become immune. Basically for Priwen eating.
Claws
- meh. Hard hitting melee attack that costs blood. For the EXP, prefer buffing ranged attack.
Rage
- Ultimate skill AOE. Sucks for stronger enemies. Bad for bosses. You can run into a bunch of Priwen and 1 hit KO them with this at max level. So much better stuff to use EXP on, though.
PASSIVE SKILLS
Physical Prowess
- ESSENTIAL. This is your weapon swinging, dodging, parrying, dashing. No stamina = dead.
Body Condition
- yes.
Hard Biting
- yes, Bite build only.
Big Thirst
- yes, Bite build only.
Fast Regeneration
- meh. Would rather Autophagy.
Blood Capacity
- meh.
Medical Bag
- skip. Heal with skills. If you need more syringes, adjust your strategy. Also, consumables don't come back if you die. Anything you used is gone.
Cartridge Bag
- skip. Save your ammo for special occasions. Also, see above re: consumables.
BUILD
I've tried both bulids: slashy and stun+bite.
Hacksaw is actually the fastest weapon. There isn't anything faster. If it's specced for a little blood drain you don't need the knife. I usually have a gun instead. I like the slashy build. It's a more consistent source of blood and the stamina can go towards dodging.
Two-handed is slow and takes a ton of stamina. One of the main draws of this type is the parry ability (for the ones that have parry anyway). A successful parry stuns the enemy so you have to get better at that. Because during a long, drawn out fight, the stun bar can get stupid long.
Stun builds just feel slow to me. You have to stun in order to bite. Then you're waiting around for the bite animation to finish before you can fight some more. Every time you do a non-parry stun, it takes longer to stun again. I hated doing bosses with this build. Also, the final boss is immune to stun.
Good positioning during a fight can save you a lot of time and stamina as well. Dodge very often to gain an advantageous position then simultaneously kill weaker enemies with one Blood Spear. Then use Spring or Claws on heavier units. Always start with an ambush and try to feed on the last man standing to get blood points up again.
Thank you! A lot of people prefer to play hacksaw + liston knife with a blood drain and I don't understand why they need this knife if they can upgrade the hacksaw with the same blood drain like you do? Maybe because knife has more blood drain than hacksaw? The blood you acquire through your hacksaw is enough for you?
Also you said you use hacksaw and a gun. What if I don't like guns? What off-hand weapon should I go with? If I upgrade my hacksaw for blood drain, then I don't need liston knife, and what do I need then? Or is it just better to upgrade the hacksaw with the damage?
And how exactly should I pick between two different ultimates, they both look great, I mean one for the mobs and one for the bosses...but I need to pick one (in terms of EXP restriction). I think I have enough tools for dealing with mobs but I don't have anything for bosses so I need the Abyss ult more, I guess? Btw, for bosses I need either upgraded weapon OR an Abyss ult, right? Nothing else?
Sorry for my poor english, not a native english speaker.
You can swap between two weapon sets during fights, so it's not like you're stuck with it. Play the way Elysion does with a stake secondary if you've got the stamina and want to do some biting. I prefer having blood drain on the weapon so I don't have to worry about when to use the knife or bite. It's up to you.
Abyss is the best ultimate for bosses, but really if you want you can just run and dodge in (careful) circles for most boss battles and hit them with whatever. There's multiple ways to beat them. Skal groups can be more trouble depending on build.
Uh, don't just put all your points into Abyss and nothing else. That would be bad. Get more stamina for sure. You have enough skill keys for four actives and one ultimate. Look at the list I did.
Keep your favourite weapon upgraded. You don't need a special one just for bosses unless you want to use guns (they can be specced for mob type) or your favourite two-hander isn't working out timing-wise. You'll get enough upgrade materials playing normally to upgrade at least one of each type. I use the saw for everything, it does the job.
Thanks again, I got it. Could you please also help me understand where to find the Dragonbane weapon because I swear when I try to google - all articles are about TRUE dragonbane. And some people in the discussion said like Dragonbane and True Dragonbane are two separate weapons. I don't have DLC, so I guess I can't get the True Dragonbane so I'm interested in regular Dragonbane, but every article on the internet is talking about the True version of this weapon and nobody tells a word about the 'normal' Dragonbane. I'd like to know where can I find it so I don't miss it.
I'll talk about the main game Dragonbane. It used to be better but it got nerfed in an update. It's okay but not that much better than any other weapon now. It's slower than the saw. You can find it in the West End (late game area) in the same place as the fortune teller. You need to solve a puzzle to get it. The articles are probably talking about this weapon.
There's nothing to say about DLC Dragonbane, you just buy the DLC and it's there.
Thanks again! ^^
This one is easy to do wrong by the way. The Fortuneteller will tell you to go to the theater to retrieve some box, in it lays a journal. The quest name is 'Pandora's Box'. Whatever you do, DO NOT READ THE JOURNAL :D I made that mistake in my last near perfect save. If you read the journal, Jonathan will say something like "I don't believe it!", when that happens the Fortuneteller will know that you read the journal and thus your reward to the True Dragonbane will be forfeit.
You can't open the vault with a cheat sheet neither. After this mistake, I tried every possible combination, took me a very long time. Only to be disappointed.
I did it before doing the mission, so maybe it completely locks you out if you read the book? Sounds unfair that you can get it early but not after though.
The trick is to stand on the tile until it stops making noise, then step off and wait until it stops making noise before stepping on the next one. Don't step on the next one until the previous one is done moving. Wait a while between each attempt.
It didn't work for me, I tried them all. But only after the mission. When was the last time you did this? I vaguely recall someone saying an update locked players from getting it early. Also there was a way to clip through the wall, a glitch that was fixed with an update as well.
I have one but I'm almost there anyway on my new 100% pacifist, hints & lore run save. I'll try it myself after I can access the temple district.
