Anyone can use the combo once they kill Adam. You can be a level 8 or a level 50, doesn't matter.

Another helpful tip that made the game way easier back in the day is to set waypoints for your survivors that you're escorting rather than hoping they follow you. They're way less likely to try and zerg zombies when you do this. You just have to keep setting a new waypoint ahead of you as you go to keep them from picking fights once they reach a waypoint.
