🛑 BEFORE YOU BUY: A MUST-READ 🛑
TL;DR: Play the demo first. It’s free and literally shows you the entire gameplay loop. What you see is exactly what you get, hashed out on repeat.

If you're booting this up expecting to grind your way up a massive 100-floor floating castle, brace yourself for a massive letdown: the full game only covers the first two floors. To cover up the lack of content, the devs heavily padded the playtime. Get ready for 5-minute stair-climbing simulators and grinding through non-canon filler arcs that feel completely out of place. 💀

🏜️ A Lifeless "MMO" Experience
The biggest L here is the lack of online features. Older SAO games actually made the world feel alive with other players and active NPCs. Because this is a strictly single-player ARPG, the second you leave the hub city, it’s a ghost town. Zero social engagement. You're just wandering a "massive VRMMO" completely solo.

Adding to the sluggish pacing are the painfully scuffed animations. Break a seal or beat a mini-boss? Prepare to stand completely still for 10 to 15 seconds while the game registers your win and slowly plays an unlock animation. It drags the pace to an absolute crawl. 🐌

⚔️ Mid Combat & Tedious Loot Bloat
Weapons matter, but the combat mechanics are incredibly basic. If you want deep, sweaty combat, this ain't it. Daggers have no acrobatic flair, and rapier users get zero fencing stances. Every weapon feels functionally identical—except for an axe that randomly turns into a buzz saw (???).

You can only hack-and-slash so many mobs before your brain goes numb. The parry/dodge mechanics are decent, and the soundtrack goes absolutely HARD 🔥, but the loot system completely ruins the vibe. It’s pure Diablo-style menu bloat. You’ll do a 30-minute run, pick up 70+ weapons, and then get forced back to a town smithy to sluggishly sort through rarities and passives. It turns what should be a fun reward loop into a massive chore. 🎒📉

🚫 Punishing, RNG-Free Exploration
Want freedom? Touch grass IRL, because you won't find it here. The game actively punishes you for exploring. The jump physics are so clunky that if you try to parkour, you'll just spend your time awkwardly sliding down rocks or burning a Blink Talisman to cross a basic gap.

Worse still is the railroaded map design. Finish a mission? Map locked. Want to go back? Replay the entire mission. The game tries to bait you into exploring by hiding chests behind mini-bosses and blocked paths, but the payoff is trash. You will jump through massive hoops, unlock a seal, scale a vertical wall... just to open a chest and get a basic health potion. 🤦‍♂️ Loot isn't randomized, meaning exploring is a massive time-loss unless you’re strictly following a guide.

🗑️ Zero Quality of Life
They gutted all the cozy MMO vibes that build immersion. You can't fish or cook, and the item crafting system is completely useless. The game throws tens of thousands of mats at you, but items are so cheap to buy with infinite in-game currency that you will never actually need to craft a single thing.

You also get zero chance to actually bond with your AI party members. There's no real rapport—just lifeless "go kill this boss" fetch quests. 💤

⚖️ THE VERDICT
I love Bandai Namco games, but as a gamer and anime fan, this one is an absolute heartbreaker 💔. Game Studio Inc. cooked with the visuals and the combat soundtrack, but fumbled almost every other category.

It’s hard to enjoy a single-player game set in an MMO world when it constantly reminds you how lonely you are. Unless you have Iori or another single NPC tagging along, you never get that full-squad feeling. With so much padded content just to justify a AAA price tag, it feels like they totally forgot what makes the SAO setting work. I’m hoping a patch saves this, but right now, it’s a tragic waste of effort for both the devs and the players. 📉

- The enemy variety consists of Boar, wolf, bug, + the 30 versions of the same thing.
- The characters are boring as hell and you are a nodding yes man.
- You have two maps Forest and desert because nothing else exists in fantasy rpgs of course,
- After the first floor boss (Which you don't actually get to fight you get to watch kirito don the title of "beater" ) You later re-enter the dungeon because the real mc tells you that we are under-levelled is the same dungeon you just did but then 2x as long as they just copied and pasted the dungeon on top of each other in the exact same layout
- once again your character may as well be a silent mercenary that Iori hired. You have literally 0 input on what you do in the story
- I literally spec'd into pure movement speed due to the missions usually consist of run through this entire map with enemies spawning on you every 20 paces which got tired very fast.
- No bond stories (Though im glad i didnt because every character is annoying asf)

Basically if you were like me and was waiting forever for a game that lets you exist in aincrad as your own character with your own choices this game aint it. Your best bet for anything like that in SAO universe is still Fatal Bullet.

Play the demo, once you have you've played the entire game loop then look at a story recap now you've completed the game without letting your brain die of boredom.

- $90 USD for the *complete* version (Death Game ironman mode, canonical to SAO, available from the start WITHOUT fully spoiling the entire game and drama and enemy variety (read: lack thereof) first
- No multiplayer in an over-max priced SAO game
- No Romance / Bonds in an over-max priced SAO game
- No branching paths or choice-based dialogue in a drama-centric over-max priced SAO game
- No Companion permadeath and story impact thereof in an over-max priced SAO game
- EXCEEDINGLY repetitive monster variety in an over-max priced SAO game
- EXCEEDINGLY poorly Q/A'd large body model enemy behavior in an over-max priced SAO game
- Utterly useless stats and gameplay types (never attempt Item Damage builds) in an over-max priced SAO game
- Incredibly vague and at times, outright broken stat and equipment descriptions in an over-max priced SAO game
- Lack of full-range cosmetic character creation and customization in an over-max priced SAO game
- Lack of openworld exploration, environmental storytelling, or radiant unscripted Player-NPC encounters in an over-max priced SAO game
- Year One DLC whose price and content we know nothing about, not least of which whether it is content already necessary for 1.0 launch to feel as though it comes anywhere close to justifying its own price
- Pre-order equipment that ACTUALLY can make you stronger due to unique weapon passives you otherwise do not have access to

It would be bad enough if it was just the way overbloating pricing debacle, but they really just phoned in some of this combat stuff. Been playing on Very Hard to get challenge out of the game as otherwise, a geriatric chimp could comfortably beat everything, but I'm noticing some cardinal sins of Souls-like game dev they did.

Biggest one? They just click-dragged the enemy models to make them bigger for boss models, but they didn't refine their hitboxes or hurtboxes, or tailor their animations to suit the enlarged model. What that creates is this ludicrously fast, massive space-occupying brick that has collision and is awkward as ♥♥♥♥ to position up against without little bumps away, but god ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ help you if they even WHIFF vaguely close to you: that's a hit, straight up.

Second cardinal sin? Zero compensation for several units all activating attack animations. No brakes pumped at any time, they all operate like they're the single unit in the fight, and all of them spam the absolute ♥♥♥♥ out of their moves, so there's just this impenetrable WALL of hurtbox at all times, so you spend WAY more time running around than actually fighting.

Which wouldn't be as much of an issue, seeing as how they have a Perfect Dodge/Block and Pre-empt Strike system that if you get the timing right, you can spam and effectively be immortal.. but the trigger times and even proximity to the enemy you are ACTIVELY ATTEMPTING TO AVOID, as well as not all attacks qualifying for some or ANY of these systems, makes for a frustratingly inconsistent experience across the board.

$90 USD game, by the way.
