what's up with these controls?
why does such a nice looking game have such janky controls?
is it supposed to be better with the keyboard or the controller?
so far, i rate the controls as on par with Paperboy for the NES

They're pretty bad yeah. I quit the game because the controls are a constant struggle.

Only gamepad saves you. With keyboard, you dont have chances.

I guess I played a different game then. I have 0 problems with keyboard and mouse...

The keyboard controls are terrible! I had to change them a few times just to complete some escapes! I guess it's a bit easier with a controller.

Most games that have any kind of platforming are typically easier with controllers. Not to say you can't do the same with keyboard and mouse with enough experience. But a gamepad lowers the skill floor a bit for games like this. I personally just prefer gamepad for it. Depends on the game and genre really.

It's really not that control intensive, so janky controls aren't usually that big of deal.

I tried both my xbox controller and keyboard and mouse, the controls just feel too terrible, which is sad. I love the game's atmosphere, animation, character design, sound design, world etc, but playing feels like wading through mud with stinging nettles wrapped around my legs while on some kind of direction-robbing narcotics.
I ultimately uninstalled the game. I'll watch a "let's play" of it later to get the story. I just can't get into these controls.

I felt this way. In a way, keyboard and mouse made it easier for me instead of controller (It's easier to walk in straight lines). My other issue was with judging the space. I would jump towards something that looks like it's in front of me but it would actually be further or nearer in the background or foreground and end up missing what I was aiming for. I've only ever experienced this issue in Nintendo games previously.
