Also, I don't see why you call it a blatant rip-off, it doesn't copy the main character, doesn't copy the story, it doesn't even have the same setting! Plus it's not a 2.5d platformer like Inside is, you have the ability to walk into corners and areas that you can't do in inside. I can't change your opinion because people will always have their side of the story, but I personally really enjoyed this game, it's not for everyone, and it could use quite a few fixes. But it's a genuine experience if you're able to get past that all.
I will uninstall the game because of this.
They copied Inside in regards to the concept, style and some details of game mechanics. Even the tiny size of character, the general atmosphere of the game and design. Inside has far more interesting and imaginative puzzles and is in a league of its own. Imitators gonna imitate. No big deal I guess, happens in art and media all the time.
Well... except "Hunger" (the original title of Little Nightmares) was announced in May 2014, when little was known about Inside (definitely not enough to "blatantly copy it"), if I remember correctly. Plus I might have forgotten about some scene, but wasn't the INSIDE's protagonist the size of a normal human child, as opposed to being about 20 times smaller than everyone else?
Now, I bought my copy of Little Nightmares in a pre-order deal on GOG, which immediately granted me a copy of Playdead's INSIDE. I played it immediately, as it was a game I had on my wishlist for quite a long time, and fell in love instantly. INSIDE is an amazing game, the graphics are clean, the animations fluid, the atmosphere is incredible, the themes are darker and scarier than Youtube discussions.
Little Nightmares was actually the very next game I played, yet it never occured to me as if these two were too similar. I had some gripes with it at first, despite my initial excitement, mostly coming from the control scheme (as a result of which the animations were sometimes a bit choppy and immersion breaking when the character suddenly teleported due to getting stuck between a couple of objects).
When the credits rolled though (after spending good 5 or so hours in the game – seriously people, why rush towards the end, do you never stop to enjoy the game for a while?), I knew I would remember this game for the rest of my life (which was the case with INSIDE, too).
The themes are largely unique to each game, and so is the general feel. Playing Little Nightmares feels nothing like playing INSIDE. Like, literally, despite them both being the same genre, hypotethically, I did not feel the same playing either. Not for a minute. Or, wait a second...
In fact, that's not entirely true. But, the only parts that actually felt similar were the Depths and the water puzzles in INSIDE. I admit that and I think the devs might have got some inspiration from Playdead. But still, it worked for the game and it didn't feel out of place. I equally enjoyed both, because they were both of very high quality and emphasized different aspects of the water gameplay.
Calling the game an INSIDE rip-off is something I would expect from someone who dashed through the game without paying much attention to anything but the gameplay. That is not wrong, of course, given the massive amount of games one might want to play. But don't complain about a lack of content then.
I mean, sure, the games are technically comparable. If you try really hard, you can find tons of similarities. But why would you do that? I can appreciate both games for their distinctive features, why would I actively try to work against that?
But I agree with you that downloading almost a whole gigabyte of data you can't even access to your computer is not cool. I wouldn't have liked that either (can't say if GOG does it, since I've pre-ordered the expansion pass, too).
TL;DR: People don't want to spend their time actually playing (or reading) the whole thing. Rather, they're just trying to look for the general point, criticise it, should they not like it, and move on.
Are they forgetting what the D stand for in DLC? DOWNLOADABLE... which means it's possible to download it if I want. Otherwise it should not be forced as a download. I cannot load the game currently unless I download 700 MB of content I cannot access without paying more.
This is unacceptable, and I don't know why more people are not resisting this fascist micro-transaction money grabbing scum-bag game development.
I felt the game was more than influenced by Inside, to the point that if Inside never existed, Little Nightmares would not be the same game. Doesn't matter... people imitate and copy all the time in music, art, games etc.
