I thought it looked like they were wearing masks, and this trading card picture seems to confirm it:

See how there's a dark hole (i.e. mouth) on the face underneath? Although that could just be the rolls of a fat neck bunched up into a coincidental shape.
But then I thought... This really looks like the masks they're wearing are made from actual faces! As in, they've cut the face off of someting and are wearing it over their own head. That seems a bit too dark, even for this game...
Still, Jynn's linked picture seems to show lips under the mask, so I guess they really are wearing something... Hopefully not mask my interpretation!

And the Janitor himself, with his strange peeled looking face, might just have half a mask?
but if this is the case...then what are they really underneath those masks?

This is from the official Little Nightmares Twitter. Enjoy.
i'd say none of us saw that discussion =P since as you said it was posted before the game was released, and odds are it's at the very very back of the forums and I don't like to Necropost. So if it's older than a few days, odds are I"m not going to go find it and read it and comment on it since it'd be buried under tons of other posts
Thanks for the link, that is super creepy
