Help! Newbie stuck in room with guy who hanged himself

So I can get the chair by the door to get out of the room. But obviously not close enough to jump and grab the door latch. Tried using the slippers and toilet paper as props to climb/jump on but no success. Not a frequent gamer. What am I doing wrong?

push the chair to the door, using the r trigger button. when you near to it, climb chair, jump to door and hold r trigger
