Theories about the game's mysteries, characters, and settings
I have played through the game twice now. The second time was spent largely on exploration and really learning everything there is to know about the game.

There is a group of 5 in the maw. The lady, I believe her children??, the janitor, a sister, or a daughter?, and some unknokwn guy.

You find the unknown guy dead at the beginning of the game with a letter. This guy is depicted to be rowing a boat and I believe he is the one that brought Six to the maw. I'm not sure why he did this.

The two chefs wear masks and are actually twins. They are also cyclops'. That is, they have one eye. Pictures of them are shown in the bathroom. The entire game is based around these twins. The eyes reference them. They love to prepare food and the entire place is designed for them to make food and for guests to eat it. I believe that the lady built this place for her children.

The lady hates her appearance. This is why she has broken all of the mirrors. You also find pictures of her that are covered up or blacked out. Of everything that is grotesque, she is the only beautiful one. I believe that she believes her beauty to be ugly. Interesting note.. the person that voiced the lady also sang songs in the ending credits.

Now, there are some pictures of a child that looks kind of like a dog. The face is extremely deformed and very wide. There is also a lot of symbology of the chef twins being sort of one person that is split into two halves. You see this with the toilet seats and a picture of the twins. You also see a symbolic toilet seat that used to be for one person. It could be that these twins were originally one person, this deformed dog child. This child potentially was two twins that were deformed into a single body. This original dog form is shown as the maw itself where the guests enter. There are also pictures of people with dog heads. The lady is probably their mother.

There is a young girl that is shown around. She appears to be around the same age as the twins and is wearing close to the same outfit that they had when they were in their deformed dog form. I don't really know who this girl is though.

There isn't a lot of information on the janitor. He loves toys though. I theorize that the little gnomes (little nightmares or w/e) that roam the maw sometimes get turned to stone/clay by having their "essence" sucked out by the eyes and the lady herself. These then become the dolls of the janitor. In his little toy room, you can find figurines that look like the nightmares and have completely different material than the normal dolls. They look very similar to the figures in the eye rooms.

I believe that the little figurines of the lady are actually infused with her power or contain her power. Black smoke arises whenever they are broken.

There is a recurring theme of shoes. There is also some clothing. The shoes come from larlge adults, large children, and little gnome children. I believe that these are the shoes of those that were consumed. This means that I believe that even the guests get cooked and served. The guests themselves have shoes on while they are alive. This is the only explanation I can come up with for the sheer quantity of shoes. There was also a pair of shoes in a fridge near the start of the game.

There is a picture of exactly 6 little gnome lads. Well, there is a picture of 2 and there is a picture of 4. That makes 6 in all. If you hug all of the gnome lads, you end up hugging 6 of them. Each gnome lad you hug appears at the end of the game. When I hugged them all, 6 showed up.

There are more than 6 gnome lads. There is one dead one for example by the sausage maker machine. There is also one that Six herself consumed.

Those are my theories on the game. I probably have more, but I am super tired atm =P.

*edit*
yea, I didn't cover the nursery, the cafeteria, the children in captivity, or the Janitor's camera over the nursery. Too tired now. Going to bed. Someone else take over ;).

Dark Water and perhaps a little of the Korean version of Hansel and Gretel, even Sadako, but I'm only very earlier in the game and these are just impressions from how it looks and what the influences could be.

I wonder if they picked 6 because of The Prisoner (main character was called No.6) series, just a hunch. (not the recent pile of ♥♥♥♥ i should note, the decent 60s version)

I just read your interesting theory and it piqued my curiosity. I posted about my own theory assuming the devs of Little Nightmares could have put their own spin on the Japanese folklore regarding fox spirits (Kitsune) that can shape shift into human form (e.g., men, boys, young girls) primarily women of great beauty. Apparently, a Kitsune will have to touch their target when feeding (souls) for the first time from a person or animal, and it is no longer required thereafter. Kitsunes are said to hate or fear dogs. One way to find out their true identity is through shadows or a mirror as you will see the shape of a fox, etc... :zombiecat:
