Games usually have to be coded and programmed from the very beginning to support multiplayer, so odds are it CAN'T be made multiplayer without completely redoing the game from scratch
No multiplayer, it will ruin the game!
HOWEVER, the problem here is the game was designed purely to be a single player experience. You'd need brand new maps designed specifically around co-op gameplay. What the game currently offers wouldn't add any additional benefit if you just dumped in a multiplayer function. That's not what the developers had intended on when they designed this game. That being said, this wouldn't be such a bad idea to explore if they decide to make a sequel, or a spiritual successor.
I guess that's the younger generation raised by digital means for you.
