Oh wow...that, I did not know. No wonder. So, most of the bad reviews are probably Kickstarters that felt they got screwed.
Also there is serious lack of variety in endgame. You run same 5 missions over and over again in exactly same looking maps fighting same enemies in same spots.
All in all i dont think that wolcen is hated. Way i remeber it being advertised was diablo / poe mix with best features taken from both games, but then in the end we got repetitive mediocre arpg with tons of bugs.

The starting company was taken over by a Russian game company over a year ago. The original devs bailed or sold out.
The really sad thing there is, that those bugs exist since the release of the game + all the new bugs and trust me, none of them will ever be fixed.
If the devs actually cared about this game, they would've fixed some of the most gamebreaking bugs by now, but no, absolutely nothing. They are still in the game and 3 times worse in Multiplayer than solo online or offline.
