best method for mages to recover Willpower?
i know i could switch to a x/Catalyst and use a Rage dump skill, but, i wanna use a Staff with all mage abilities. so far, the "best" way is Willpower Potions + left-clicks.

also, does attack damage effect spells? i know it works on left-clicks, but i'm not 100% sure it works on spells.

Staff damage does not work on spells, and your just kinda screwed with willpower I'm afraid.

They screwed up willpower costs/regen in release so using a staff is just gimping yourself currently.

Make a hybrid and use Attack skills (turret is a common solution)

other than taking willpower reduction on your abilities, i don't think there is a way to regain willpower efficiently other than the way you've stated. there are some skills in the passive tree that give you +25 WP per hit, so you might want to spec into that.

i use potions constantly. bind it to something comfortable, because it's a huge part of your rotation. i'm not a fan of potions taking a global cooldown. it makes combat clunkier than it needs to be. so you need to account for that. but yeah. potions and left-clicks.

i'm pretty sure attack damage is all damage types.

I am playing a pure mage build too, so I can feel you. It gets more manageable later in the game if you unlock more -willpower cost perks.
Also I use the lightning minion to get some extra dps while strolling around (helps while gaining willpower and when you have to constantly dodge)

Get your attack speed up and let them normal attacks fly. Its really the same for bow characters having to use regular attacks. It's not that bad really. If you invest in the right passives you will have a very large pool to draw from. Just gotta learn to alternate.

Also there are some skills which can get you some will power on use. But you will have to level them to get those perks.

that's about what i was expecting (and afraid of). i guess i'll just have to deal with it.

You can find willpower regeneration on your stuff, and there is some nodes in the skill tree that increase your willpower regen. But it's mostly "invest in cost reduction, have a huge willpower bar and kill things quickly". Weave a bit of attacks with your staff from time to time and all will be ok.

There's a mage spell that lets you use melee skills after using it. So you can combo them with a staff if you use that.

Almost nothing increases your willpower, going through everything you can get +500 willpower (50% increase) and thats that

the only real choice is to abandon staves and go 1h dagger or gun + catalyst then have a rage dump skill

Personally, I just dump everything on Willpower related passives and roll Willpower cost reduction and Cost generation. Granted I run a toxic nercomancer build, I just toss zambos into the grinder that is Plagueburst and gas everything. It's pretty cheap on willpower surprisingly.
Infinity blades > lvl 29 rune

I feel like we're playing a different game. I can go from 0 to full willpower with a couple seconds of staff attacking and no points in agility.

infinity blades. though i get it back almost as fast just using normal staff attacks.

yeah, i have no problem regening Willpower with just slapping stuff with my staff, but i'd like to avoid that if at all possible.

Lightning minion? which skill is that? I've not seen it yet. Building a lightning DOT mage so I'd most def use it.
