This or Diablo II?
I'm serious, I never played Diablo II and everyone says it's the best ARPG ever made.

So I'm thinking of buying it instead of Wolcen... But it's also 20 years old...

What do you think? Is it still a great game or is it way too old?

I mean in my personal opinion if you're used to playing more modern games going back to d2 can be hard. As much as i love d2 and invested a significant portion of my teenage years into the game, i can't play it regularly anymore because of how it feels sometimes. I can thank d3 for that mostly, for all d3 does badly it does a few things extremely well. Like the feeling of combat and fluidness of it all etc. Wolcen is almost on the level of d3 in that regard, it has some issues that i'm not sure if it's just me feeling them... like input delay with abilites like roll and health potions , but other than that the game to me feels excellent gameplay wise. The abilities all sound ,look and feel amazing . I would recommend this over d2, but honestly it depends on what you value in your games.

If you are honeslty looking for a more modern version of diablo 2 besides path of exile, either grim dawn or my new favorite is last epoch which is an amazing game. It has a super great dev team and the game is constantly being updated as it's still in development. Even in the middle of development it has a fully functional pretty long campagin as it is with more being added in a few weeks maybe even next week and basically a rift system. I highly suggest looking into last epoch if you're unsure about wolcen. Path of exile you can try at anytime though as it's free.

Diablo 2 is...really difficult to jump into these days, especially without heavy mods.

So far I'm having tons of fun with Wolcen. Honestly, it feels a lot like what Diablo 3 SHOULD HAVE BEEN, bugs aside. Which , as others have pointed out, will be ironed out as things go forward.

Wolcen currently lacks in too many aspects to be recommended. Maybe when they iron it all out, but not right now.

Did you ever tried Path of Diablo, if you love D2 you should definitely try it out, i play it for years now, and its what Bliizz should have done with the game, it has lots of Qualitiy of life improvements, its so good it will blow your midn, it has wide screen resolution and with the glide program it even looks better.
The mod is very easy to handle, again path of Diablo will blow your mind if you liked D2.

After the way Warcraft 3 ended up I don't even want to see the attempt, they will ruin that too.
I agree. I do think that Diablo 2 if they tried to remaster that it would be a lot worse than Warcraft 3 because they would have to remake the game from scratch because the original source material for Diablo 2 was lost and gone due to the file corruption the 3 Blizzard North founders told a story about that situation.
diablo 2 save ur time wolcen is a buggy mess atm maybe after a month or 2

Diablo was the best arpg because there barrely any good arpg back then. Nowaday there are lots of choices like grim dawn and torchlight, heck tree of savior is also good at some point.

In my opinion, it's too early to judge wolcen even though the game has already entering the alpha for years. So far i barely encounter any major bug beside early week fiasco and i like the way they design the game. Wolcen definitely still got a lot of potential and i hope the game will getting better...as fast as possible
Barely encountered any bugs? There's nodes in the double digits for the passive tree that don't even work correctly. It baffles me that someone would think an ARPG, a genre which revolves around builds, would think that the very foundation for creating those builds being broken doesn't constitute as a major bug.

Diablo 2 is still the best ARPG out there.

Grim Dawn has some intelligent things it brings to the table that help make a lot of builds viable such as reputation vendors and components.

PoE has a cool dark concept that got ruined by a greedy Chinese owned New Zealander.

D3 is just flat out boring. D4 is probably going to be a huge mess given how bad Blizzard been doing lately.

So ya, nobody seems to have gotten the memo of "we really just want a Diablo 2 remastered with a few extra goodies and longer gameplay". Dunno why its so hard to copy and paste a game from 1998. :\

Comparing D2 to any modern ARPG is basically like comparing the original Doom to the 2016 game of the same name.

i do like wolcen, dont get me wrong, but DEFINITELY Diablo 2...

Because it's not as easy as copy as pasting a game from 1998, if it was any company would do it to maximize their profits for the least amount of work. The ways games are made today alone is drastically different than it was previously. All you need to do is go to the interviews david brevik has about how difficult and in some cases almost impossible for blizzard to remaster d2.

Not a fan of Mods. Probably why I don't like Path of Exile, as it feels like an expanded D2 mod.

I can't quite put my finger on why. Feels like a tryhard to me, where it's technically "so much better", but overlooked the original. Like trying to make a better steak by tossing an entire cow onto a fire pit.

3 is a giant puddle. 2 is a deep lake.

3 has fluid combat, but ultimately, you'll just be finding the exact same gear with progressively harder and harder rifts.

2 has greater depth. Nearly every item type / rarity has the potential to be effective. You may find the perfect item early on, or you may never find it. You'll probably find an excellent item to make yet another character and build. One day you might be running Countess in Act 1 for runes, the next might be hitting up the Travincal Council in act 3.

3 is a game about DPS and killing faster.

2 is a game about loot grinding and character builds.
