And yes, that's realistic.
Did actual officers reload during the actual war? Of course. But its the right move here. I once saw an infantry officer grab an arty officer and they went down a stone wall and wiped out twelve guys after a volley. Not really what you want game play wise when promoting team based play.
As an officer, at those times when you live long enough to run out of pistol shots you resort to the sword. As infantry you have your one shot then resort to bayonet. It's part of the excitement of the era.
Why people want to transform this excellent game into Back 4 Blood is beyond me.
It's not particularly realistic to not have extra ammunition but considering how quickly you can wipe out six people with it, it's definitely a good balance consideration.
