Apartment only building possible? :D
Hello everyone - i have been watching walkthroughs of this game for a couple of days now.

So many features, so many things to build which is making my head spin lol XD

So i wanna ask before i buy - is it possible to build a building in this game with only apartments? No offices, stores, eateries and other stuff. Will the tenants get angry? Will i be able to make a profit this way?

Maintenance offices and utilities ofc im fine with it :)

In short, you can't. But there are some alternative ways to do so.

There are two types of requirements of the residents.
A: Basic places to dine. Every person in your building will want any kind of meals and coffees at morning/lunchtime/dinner. Especially, your maintenance staffs and service providers will anger a lot because they can't leave the building during their duty. So, you need to have at least a few number of restaurants, covering breakfast, lunch, dinner, coffee.
B: High-tier residence requirements. In order to build some large and luxurious residence, you need quite a number of restaurants and retails. You need to build those tenants first. Also, they demand you a lot of service providers(plumber/daycare/dry-cleaning/etc.).

Possible Detours
1. Choose large or broad map and separate building. You can separate apartments and restaurants/retails by building them separately. Actually, I use this way quite frequently as it looks realistic and doing so makes it easier to plan&disperse the traffic lines.

2. Stick with low-tier apartments(ex. studio size). They will still need A type restaurants. But they don't demand the others. So you can minimize the non-apartment areas.

hmm ok thanks.

one question - i watched one guy on youtube and he seems to have problem filling his apartments because they are all 1 room luxury apartments.

if i were to buy this game and follow a pure studio building wouldnt i suffer the same fate as well?
dont wanna waste my money lol

As I can't expect the size of your building, I'm not sure but building the same residence too much might cause some vacancy issues. But it does not happen that frequently.

Once I tried to make a dormitory by filling the building only with students residence. As I was building offices and hotel together, it took quite long time but residence building was first to achieve zero vacancy. When the dorm was built, office building was 70% complete and hotel was showing some vacancy.

In short, yes waiting for tenants to come in can take some time but for the most cases there will be no vacancy issues in long term.

Not really, unfortunately. For having such breadth, this game is surprisingly linear. It basically requires you to have significant mixed use in your building to progress, eventually tasking you with meeting more and more of the tenants' needs, starting with mid and high level commercial and dining spaces, and escalating into an increasingly specialized and unusual building services.

I got the the point where I had to stop. It's at least plausible that a residential landlord might pay for pet care, laundry services, or other common amenities to entice new wealthy tenants. And it's not inconceivable that office building landlords would offer bottled water, office supply, and courier/mail room services to their tenants directly, instead of contracting out. But wealth advising? Auditing? Temporary staffing? These are simply not services that a commercial landlord would need or want to provide in the real world. Those services can be provided so much more competently and cheaply by outside companies or individuals that specialize in these kinds of things. You know, like an auditor, a wealth advisor, or a temp agency.

So, in addition to having a linear progression structure, Project Highrise's other major flaw is that it takes place in an artificial vacuum. Outside the building's walls, there are no delis, coffee shops, laundromats, office supply stores, or other things you might expect in your average downtown. Each and every one of your tenants' needs must be met by the building owner, no matter how specific that need is, or how much expertise is required to fulfill it. Even the office workers who commute to the building (presumably from somewhere) and leave at the end of the day must have all their office support needs met by their landlord. It's mind boggling.

Actually if you abstract things a bit, having a dedicated office for the auditors isn't farfetched, but actually realistic. Some large financial firms have an entire floor dedicated to their external auditors.

Your other points are fair though :)

I agree the game forces you down a path and is not a real sandbox in some regards. I think it would be interesting to hear that you have clients or potential customers that would appreciate in-house services and then provide you the opportunity to fill the need through two paths. In the first path you connect the client with a service provider in your building, such as the auditing request. The second path would include an opportunity to lure in a new tennet that can fulfil those needs.

On the whole, I agree that P-H sort of exists in its own vacuum.

I'm surprised that none of the office workers appear to stop at the Donut Shop for coffee and a donut. With thirty offices filled I will see they only had twelve customers the previous day, and you know most of them were your building staff. I will see office workers going to the restaurents for lunch, but seldom for dinner. As a matter of fact, almost nobody comes in after six for anything.

There is a taste that something going on outside matters when you get the news the economy is booming or the economy is weak. But beyond that there is little going on to influence what you do once you get a system down for preparing ahead for the next step or jump ahead, such as adding a section for residential.

I wish there were something like in the Railroad Tychoon of some years ago where you had to compete for customers.

Don't get the impression I don't enjoy the game. I do enjoy it as I try to min-max it. I haven't conquered each challenge and become a success with a helicopter limo service on my rooftoop. But I think it could go to another level. Definately worth the cost compared to a movie ticket.

Yes, get the bundle!

Get the game, just remember that start will always be the same, filling 10 floors with level 1 offices and reading news while game generates money in background.
