Vanguard is a good class to start, later on consider replacing some of the skills with Marauder.
Really depends on what you want to do and or go about how to gain ships. Boarding is very handy as it can save you a lot of money for ships, plus they are a good way to make materials as well from scraping ships you don't want. Most times in my games I always take all the boarding perks as I prefer to play a "Pirate Style" of play, WHy buy ships when you can take them for free!
But other perks are handy as well, as such;
Weapon training in the primary weapon of choice you like
Diplomacy, merchant, and Freelancer, Hacking, Fixer, Tactical Appraisal, These are some of the perks I like to acquire, alon with the boarding perks.
