How to conquer a planet?

I feel that there should be a sticky called "Short Questions Thread" where we can ask short questions like these...

If playing campaign, you will get to a mission where you will need to build (Spoiiler ahead) Proxima via research (That last tab in research panel thats not opened yet), The planet killer Platform it is moved to positions at planets, where you have to destory all the hostile ships coming to kill it and once you deal with the enemy ships, it will then decimate the planet. or build it via Researching its parts to build it.

But....why decimate the planet... i want to conquer it not erase it from existence I aint some crazed lunatic :O

I want to take planets , but I have a problem with scorching a planet surface. I don't mind killing millions of people, but think of the cute animals and plants?! I would be most grateful if a future DLC would give other options like human-only bio weapons or planetary invasion.

Can't we just drop Tons of "reality shows" on the planet like the Kardashians? (The Orville) Their civilization will automatically drop to the lowest common denominator and will be incapable of building spaceships.
