Generally, I just rely on drops though (filling heavy slots is my last priority when I'm spending credits) and most of the time, I don't use them at all. Heavies are in a slightly better place DPS-wise now that you can fire them all at once from any angle but they still don't scale very well into the late game and on a controller, it usually doesn't take me long to get sick of mashing the 'Fire' buttons constantly for a relatively small benefit.
See, Light Weapons scale as you move up to bigger ship sizes because of how you multiply their effect with more turrets. Heavy Weapons have nothing like that. When you're in a Frigate or Destroyer, they easily pack enough of a punch to take out a third or even half of the enemy Hull as a result.
When you move on up, however, they will barely scratch the paint of the enemy Battleship whereas your Light Weapons will blast everything to pieces quite nicely.
