The lower % of Hull the ship has, the easier it is to capture. (similar to SPG2)
E.g. if you damage a ship to 20% hull remaining, once captured, if you chose to put in your Garage, you will be forced to pay for the hull repair fee of the captured ship.
But it actually would be a lot nicer to be proportionate to damage.
But it's also unrealistic. There should be a stadard price and if damage is beyond the standard price, you pay more for it.
There is a bonus for the hull damage at the moment of capture due to the impending doom!
I felt that there were already a lot of layered important decisions around boarding and if we were to reward players for not damaging external part of the ship but also give bonus chance if you do, it would create a decision that would be counter-intuitive to itself and would better serve a system where it is nigh impossible to capture ships by default which is not the case in SPG Warlords.
So in short - it was decided not to punish players for having fun around boarding for the sake of pinpoint accurate realism! :)
Also I think 25% hull or below is the maximum bonus you can get so no reason to "get ship as low as possible". And the boarding in general is entirely possible without that bonus but it is satisfying to know and to be able to make a change once you encounter unfavourable odds.
Just out of curiosity, what exactly 'is' the bonus? It it a small bump to maximum stamina while boarding the ship? Extra % chance to capture? Or do you just lose less stamina when going from one room to the next?
Whatever it is, it must be pretty small because I've honestly never noticed a difference (but I'm also fine with that).
Perks and Teleporter Enchantment helps, of course, but in the end it is all about getting lucky with the best room layout (with the Medbay having just one room between it and the Bridge). It can often be the difference between a 90% and a 15-20% chance - far too often than I'd like.
