This post (new one today by our resident SPG YouTuber TheRevPlays) has some tutorial Video's up : http://steamcommunity.com/app/419480/discussions/0/133257959063842547/
Also,
The equipment, weapons etc are all under DRYDOCK and its interface tabs to buy weapons, equipment(boosters and such) enhancement for your guns, shield, engines, etc.
What to do, well currently the campaign is not in and shall be coming closer to launch, so your playing pure sandbox at this time. Start off by making some credits, sending your civilian fleets to do their missions (Civilian Fleets are sent to their tasks via the Star Map).
By upgrading your ship a little, you should be able to do some conquest and capture some weak regions nearby (Click on their Fleet icon to see strength of there fleets, one around 200-300 you can solo with just your own ship - Playing on Normal or Easy, but alsop doable on Extreme).
Work on upgrading your HQ, and starting to build Ore Mines, Gas mines, and Junk reclaimers.
Once Research is built on your HQ, you can start researching new weapons, ships(For your fleets) and many other fun things.
Explore the map, opening up the map is a huge help as well, having the ability to see the enemy and friendly fleets moving around gives you an indication on what they are upto.
Hope some of this helps, and check out TheRevPlays vids for some additional help :)
Okay, thanks for the help. Can I gather resources myself by mining? In the starter area it's limited with only 2 tings that pop up at a time, and the amount of time it takes for each fleet to finish.... well, it's taking a bit longer than I would like.
Time the fleet takes to survey etc on the mission varies, and can improve through research (iirc - Not in game atm to confirm that). But this is a game that isnt played out in an hour, it takes time to build up your resources, build combat fleets, gain ranks to get into larger vessels, build up and improve your HQ and so on. I am 270 hours clocked up on SPG Warlords, and my Main Game is a solid 120 hours of sandbox playing and I still enjoying what I do.
But Sandbox requires you to do what you please, your not limited to one thing, get you Civilian fleets doing their jobs, you run missions, go open up the map, try out some random missions that pop up on the map (little round spiky icons, and they turn into a purple star icon when near to goto and do for rewards, credits, resources etc.
Go and take those weak regions for your faction, which in turn increases your resouce income.
Fly around and try crazy things, take on a random fleet (Save prior hehe) with your little gunship for chits and giggles, I can spend hours ingame doing stupid things seeing if I can pull it off. I play on Extreme Difficulty as well, as it increases the fun for me (Not for everyone that difficulty).
Scavenging wrecks can giv eyou resources as well, either using scavenger drones, or just shooting the wrecks, Drones give a better loot outcome over just shooting them.
