- When not going through the campaign, is it possible to switch like.. mid-game or something, somehow ?
It would give a ton of replayability as each faction would have a different set of quests to do with their own conflicts and turmoils. However, before such an expansion I'd suggest that each faction you can join should have a full roster of ships from gunship to carrier, otherwise progression will feel very gimped playing for them.
The sandbox elememt simply get boring eventually, and more story (even better, branching plot choices) is much better imho.
