Warlords is amazingly good, SPG 2 pales into comparison, LGM have released Warlords and its a massive leap in quality of every part in the game series. And also you would be supporting LGM Developers by grabbing Warlords, being LGM are one of the best Dev Teams for being open to all feedback, always on the forums replies to posts, and very transparent in what is in their games, with community feedback making a huge impact on design of the game(s).
So it may sound bias, but Yes I recommend grabbing Warlords as well as playing SPG 2. You wont reget doing it.
The only thing i really wish this game had was some sort of fleet command system. Think like in Mount&Blade Warband, nothing fancy, just "hold position", "advance", etc. Currently my fleet sometimes does really stupid stuff, like running into the field of fire of every damn turret when i try to attack large outpost, and it can be really annoying. I understand why some people just solo stations after they get to Dreadnoughts and i'm sort of doing the same atm.
But OP you should bite the story first in SPG2, you can play both the original as the second one in there, and they will help you understand the political background of the Gemini system better.
I never got into SPG2 much either but I really wanted too, oddly enough I played a bit of it but put it back down several times, for me a non-empire game without any 4X aspects I expected more of a "Freelancer" dogfighting style of combat POV which I actually do still prefer in space sims, I just find piloting a ship and letting things shoot for themselves a little tiredly, as the action is being done for you and you wind up feeling more like you are just commanding the ship rather than "flying" the ship so I just drowsy sitting there watching it do the work while all I am doing is changing targets or button mashing on cooldowns....
Something which made me quit EvE online which while a super good space MMO with everything anyone could dream about, the combat method just isn't for me however if we are to compare Warlords too EvE well I would say the combat style is quite similar so if you wanted an 4X style with a much larger budget and much more to do with consequences then I say play EvE. Call me old fashioned but I can't get over the itch of Freelancer style combat, It could be improved yes but taking away the control from the player and making more of a point and click isn't my idea of space gameplay.
Warlords, on the other hand, has 4X parts to the management of fleet and your empire which IMO separates it as a genre from GW2 for this I accept I cannot Freelancer dogfight. Well, It would be a lie to say you can't as you certainly could but you would be at a big disadvantage during combat as the gameplay is built around the position of your ship to get the max out of your capability and fire arc and shields.
If you did not care about that (like me) you could certainly just fly around in a POV or behind the ship dogfighting everything, which is my personal preference. Just the gameplay will destroy you sometimes because there will be times you could have survived but let yourself die because you played in this style and didn't position your ship for survivability and just took the beating on your already downed rear shields rather than taking the advantage of your other full shield ¼s.
I think this is a better game because it gives me something to do such as fleet management and fly around with a fleet and destroy stations and expand my empire. If you remove those features I might as well play something like "Galaxy on Fire 2" and if I wanted an online version of this experience I would go back to EvE.
Hopefully, this helps people decide.
I can't make such promises just because Warlords was huge undertaking and it still is in a way, however it would be nice to have more links to SPG2. Blackwell <3
It is an improvement on 99% of the aspects.
And as soon as Devs will release Freeroam for every faction, bye bye summer's sun and social life. :D
