Junking Test.
So I did a little test just now to see how many materials I could get from flying through a junkyard in the 3 minutes it takes for a player to recieve the passive amount of resources you get from the collectors. But before I get to that, some players may be off-put by how the game displays recieved resources from things like mining, or junking.

You dont get an immediate popup every time you destroy an asteroid or a piece of junk floating around, the game gives you ~5 seconds before the popup shows up showing you how many materials you've gotten and this timer resets every time you destroy a piece of junk and will give you a total amount earned after that timer ends.

My highest collection rate was ~48 materials recieved before I could get to the next piece of junk. Not every bit of junk you destroy will give you materials, and the amount you get ranges from 1 to 5 per piece.

I recieve 146 (100 from 2 rank 1 upgraded junk collectors and 46 from phaenaros) every "week" (which is 3 minutes) and waited for the week to roll over. When I started this test I had 4744 materials, and by the end I had 5107.

So to figure out just how many materials I got in those 3 minutes we have to subtract 4744 and 146 from 5100. Which amounts to 217 materials in 3 minutes.

Keep in mind that these results are without any of the 2 junking perks. I'm not sure how the first perk would affect the results, as it doesnt state by how much the chance rate for materials increases, but the second perk increases materials recieved by 33%, which would make my total go from 217 to 288 materials (+71 from the +33% perk).

Now while this way may be boring to many people, and the payoff is far far less than boarding, it is still an alternative to just merely waiting around doing nothing in game as you wait for resources to roll in.

Granted, your results will vary based on your weapons and ships. I wouldn't reccomend doing this until you have a corvette or a frigate with decent damage weapons with high range, otherwise destroying the objects will take far too long.

As an added bonus, you regularly get loot from junking, most of which has a value of over 500, so you make some money on the side.

By no means is this a great way to obtain materials, you're better off capping ships, but it is something to do to help break up the monotony of doing what you normally do. So relax, turn up some tunes and get scavenging you old space dogs.

Freelancing on salvage missions with perks gives you nice amount of materials. Take note, bigger derelict gives more materials.

I actually took both salvaging perks in this game im currently playing, and yes scavenging missions give really decent material rewards. (also, you can double dip derelicts with your swarms, because the loot and materials show up before the derelict is eaten by the swarm so you can then shoot and blow up the derelict to get even more loot and materials)

Edit- Just did a Salvage mission for anyone curious, I wound up making 221 materials with both perks, but none of the derelicts were of the large variety, so results will vary.
