Help needed to understand boarding in CAMPAIGN
I feel very stupid.... I am told to disable a ship at the very beginning of the caampain.

I do so: the ship is disabled.

I then check "Turret" on so that I can stabilize my ship... then the disabled ship moves away from me ! why ?

I uncheck then turret I am close again so I select "Transport Troops" as requested. I stay in the non turret mode.

I advance - I do the pillage thing but at one point I can no loger advance - it "retreats" me automatically....

So I have to select "Transport Trrops" again but this time if I don't use "Pillage" then I can go all the way.

What am I doing wrong ?

Thank you !!

You are told to capture the ship, do that.
You probably do not have enough endurance to pillage and capture it, so drop the former.

So I can pillage no problem and suddenly it retreats ?! That makes no sense. Then pillage should be GREY OUT (I mean some kind of info that I don't have endurance) so that I can continue advancing. Because If I don't click on Pillage (by the way another thing that make no sense is that I can disable the thusters over and over again...) after let's say 4 time when advancing (if I suddenly stop pillaging in the process) then I can advance all the way and capture the bridge / ship.

In short why retreating after a successfull pillage ?
And why allowing the same pillage over and over again ?

When you board the ship, don't do any pillaging actions. Just keep pressing forward. Pillaging eats up a great deal of troop endurance, and isn't something that can really be used when you intent to make it all the way to the bridge and capture a ship. At least not in the early game.

thank you Omega................. Clear and precise answer. Now I understand.

Edit:
But I must say that some scripting should be revised. Being able to pillage the same things over and over kills the imersion. Just my (very) humble opinion.

You're not pillaging the same things over and over. I'm saying this from memory so might have the wrong order, but first you pillage cargo, then you advance and stop their weapons, then you disable the engine and then you get to bridge, in the middle there usually you get to the med bay as well.
You could use this to your advantage against fighting much bigger ships for example, you could try to disable their weapons and just blow them up. Or you can play as a priate and just steal their cargo and run away.

what I meant is the fact that because suddenly I am retreating (script forces me to) and I send again transport troops (SAME SHIP of course) then I pillage the same things I had pillaged before :)

I think the issue is you are actually failing the pillage, or unable to, if you succeed, you cannot pillage the same area again on the same boarding action.

Cargo-engines-shields-weapon. ^.^;; Med Bay is anywhere between cargo and weapon.

Because you have to start over. The ships you board have troops also. So its their troops securing the ship. It goes cargo, engine, shield, weapon, bridge with a med bay in the mix.

And posted at same time I guess..

Basically what Cenderi said. Thanks for the correction. I hardly ever do pillaging so can never remember the order.

Also wanted to give another advice on boarding. Your troops endurance and numbers fall when you do boarding, so I'd advise not to attempt boarding right away if you've failed at it, unless you're in really big ship trying to take over a small one.
Cenderi May 26, 2017 @ 12:06pm
Well, you can easily board early, You just need to aim for savvy chief and put points into it early.

If you wanna be a pirate ship stealer like myself you can, lots of benefit. But if you don't - dont feel pressured to do so heh.

(It takes a lot of your talent points to really steal, so it is best to go all in or not at all)

Yeah I meant if the boarding fails, there isn't really a point to try to board again right away, you'll probably fail, unless you're in like a capital ship, where you can capture smaller ships or freighters right after another. In a dread I did 3 freight liners in a row once. That was crap ton of money, I'm not sure if they've changed that in the final yet. I've only caught freighters for about 100K each, but I think each faction gives a different amount.

Thank you all very much !!

In the beginning of the campaign or game it's best just to do one or the other.Later you can research better armor for troops and eventually pillage and capture it one turn. However you do have to capture ships as well as pillage ships in order to unlock future perks.
Eatmoremeat May 26, 2017 @ 12:38pm
Yep what gbogy said. Usually early on I just go for capture exclusively. Once I get a bigger ship I'll pillage for cargo sometimes, usually don't pillage the other stuff because I'm still going for capture and don't care if their weapons, engine or shield are disabled. It gets a bit grindy though to get some of those later perks where you need to have a certain number of things pillaged. Usually I try to find a swarm of gunships in my dread, disable auto fire and just pillage them one by one. You do this on 4 gunships and you get like 16 pillage points and they can't hurt your at all.
